Book Description

March 13, 2008
First published in 1834, Lives of Necromancers is perhaps one of the most thorough overviews of the lives and legends of both fictional and historic individuals associated with the magical arts. Godwin thoughtfully summarizes the histories and tales of mankind, from ancient Rome and Egypt to Eastern traditions all the way to the witchcraft trials of Europe and the new world. Godwin presents a fascinating overview of mankind's obsession with the magical arts and the impact that obsession has on the collective psyche.

About the Author

Born in 1756, William Godwin was considered one of the preeminent radical thinkers of his time. His most famous works, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice and Things as They are or the Adventures of Caleb Williams, were considered scathing attacks on political institutions and aristocracy. He married feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft in 1797, and their daughter Mary (author of Frankenstein) was born in the same year.
