The volume thus completes the translation, begun in The Book of Pontiffs (Liverpool, 1989), the first translation into any modern language apart from continuations written from the late eleventh century onwards.

A truly impressive work of scholarship, if a non-historian like myself is allowed to say so. My main criticism (and disappointment) is that the glossary is not self-contained in this volume, and that for specialized terms and titles (in particular those having to do with papal and municipal officials), the reader is referred to Professor Davis's work on the popes of the eighth century.
