The movie "The Lives of Others" is unforgettable. The main tracks of this soundtrack uncannily re-create the inner lives of the characters. The title track is a stand-alone classic.

However, this very short CD (29:29) and its minimal documentation is poor value. You can buy the entire movie on DVD for less money.

Consider buying the MP-3 downloads of the title track ("The Lives of Others"), the thematically-important "Sonata for a Good Man", and a couple of the longer tracks. You can get more than half of the contents of the entire CD-- by far the most important parts-- for $3.96 total. You can buy both the MP-3 downloads AND the movie DVD for about the same money as the audio CD alone.

In the alternative, if you're only into audio, consider getting the MP-3 downloads mentioned above AND the bargain classic recording of the Shostakovich Violin Concerto #1 (Oistrakh & NYPO) and the Cello Concerto #1 (Rostropovich & Philadelphia O.) This disc is an audio monument, only $9.95, and captures perfectly the energy and heart-breaking sadness of this great movie and the historical period it depicts. It's a revelation, and you'll still pay less for both than for this overpriced CD.

If you loved the movie like I do, you'll love hearing this memorable score again and again.

The movie was fantastic. And the music added dimension. The music was so good that it stands alone well just for listening.

If you think that this is the best film produced in the world since American Beauty, then you have to have this soundtrack. I sure as heck do. The music does an incredible job of building tension in the film. The downside to this CD of film music is that it does only carry 29 minutes 29 seconds of music.

The disc contains some nice photos, but only one page of notes from Florian. (I drove 100 miles to see this movie, and I will drive 500 miles to see Florian's next.) There is nothing from the composers.
