This is a wonderful book that takes shell collecting to a greater depth.
As you show a shell collection, use this book to illustrate to the children what used to live in a particular type of shell.

This book was great to read to my 5-year-old grandson who lives near the ocean. He has seen lots of shells, now he knows more about them and where they come from - written plain and simple for young kids to understand. He could even read a little of the book himself. Highly recommend this book - I even learned a couple things!

Wonderful book to get before and during a beach vacation,
This review is from: What Lives in a Shell? (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
This book was very facinating for my 4 year old. We took it on our beach vacation and she learned so much since she could see the things she was reading about. She has also wanted to read it since coming home. A wonderful book.

My 6.5-year-old daughter has developed a keen interest in science and though these Stage 1 books are recommended for pre-school-K level kids, I thought they would make a nice introduction to science and that she would be able to read them independently. This title is an excellent way to get children to understand how shells can provide homes for all kinds of creatures such as snails, turtles, crabs, scallops, etc.
It was interesting for my daughter to discover that whelks and conchs are types of snails that are only found by the seaside. I pulled out my collection of seashells and we had fun comparing the different kinds of shells to those portrayed in the book. The book is not only filled with interesting facts but lots of beautiful full-color illustrations that make for an educational and engaging reading experience.

After spending a week at the seashore with our 1-year-old grandbaby (who loves books), I decided to purchase this book to explain more about the seashells we found at the beach. I actually loved reading the book myself, because it made me realize that the shells we collected are actually the homes of living creatures, and not just hard pieces of matter. The pictures were very colorful and graphic to keep the attention of a small child. Very good book - I highly recommend it!

This book was a great book to introduce my granddaughter to the findings on the beach of south west florida. WE found lots of shells washed up on shore so it really made collecting them more interesting for her.
