Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Solo album from the former Canned Heat guitarist is full of what Walter Trout does best--grungy, gritty guitar riffage set to killer grooves. That pretty much describes the best stuff here, including the opening title track, the rolling "Let Me Know," the funky "Say What You Mean," and the closer "Prisoner of a Dream," which adds horns and organ to the mix. Trout's also played with British blues elder John Mayall, and it shows in his solo work--he's got that blues-rock mix that is so typical of British blues, and so appealing when done well, as it is here. He's not quite as good at ballads; "Sweet Butterfly" wanders, and "Fool for Love" doesn't have as strong a base as the more uptempo material. On the other hand, "Through the Eyes of Love" shows that Trout can play guitar clean as well as gritty, and "Nothin' but the Blues" is solid from beginning to end. A strong entry overall, and perfect summer listening. --Genevieve Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars If you play and love guitar, you need this CD! October 23, 1999
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There are tons of media hyped guitar gods out there, and that's the problem - all noise and no skills. There have been and are great guitarist, if love the guitar you know them all, Stevie Ray, Buchanan, Gatton, Jimi, BB, Albert Collins, etc., the real gods, the players we listen to and try to learn from their incredible talents. Well add another, Walter Trout. Who is this upstart? Walter has been around quite a while, do a little research and you will soon see. How can I best describe his latest CD? Well it's easy, it has not left my CD player for two weeks! In the same sense that Stevie Ray Vaughan was an open channel to creativity and emotion, Walter trout is also. His genius for guitar goes from comforting to devastating. Killer tone, incredible music, other worldly guitar - you need this CD.

Critics have said that Walter Trout plays too many notes. True, there's a lot going on in his solos, with notes coming at you faster than you could imagine, but they do have feeling, and are clear. Almost nobody out there can play as fast as Walter, and none can play at that speed as cleanly. The rest of the band, although good, is clearly designed around him. Anytime you listen to a Walter Trout album, you are in the presence of true greatness, so allow yourself to be pulled in. This is not background music.
If you buy this album, you will realize that I'm not over-stating his skill. There's a reason why he's quickly gaining in popularity in the States, and is a show-stopper at blues festivals. He and his band play long sets and with great intensity. God help the band that has to follow him.
There's one sure way to decide ahead of time if you'll like this album. Do you like a harder type of blues-rock? If yes, ANY Walter Trout CD will be a great purchase. If not, his stuff may be a little too much to digest. Not for the easy-listening or Britney Spears crowd.
I saw him play live in Cleveland recently, and it's even better that the studio recordings. Trust me, you have never seen someone work an electric guitar the way he does. It's a lot like watching Arnold, in the movie Predator, mowing down half the forest with an M-60.
I practice all the time, but I'll be 150 years old before I can do the same things with my Strat.

5.0 out of 5 stars the legacy continues July 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
"Living every day" and scorching all the way. Walter's creative well still runs deep and most of the waters are turbulent. This guitar cracks with ferocity--yet the production is a perfect framework for songs that show shades of Scaggs, Santana, Buchanan and "oh my God" even Dylan. This album continues a legacy of Walter's shere immersion into gut-wrenching and soulful guitar. Good CD's and songs call for repeated listenings as you try to figure out what is going on-what the man is doing. Every time you hear it--you hear it differently. This album WILL NOT DISSAPOINT.

5.0 out of 5 stars What More can you say - first class as usual! February 28, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is another classic Walter Trout album. The title track is a first class start to the album and it just gets better. Enjoy track 6 "through the eyes of love" - This is Trout showing a lot of control on the guitar with a definite Santana bent! A must for all blues listeners. Can I also recommend Walter trout Live "No More Fish Jokes" Its a 1992 release which is well worth a listen.
