Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a pair of albums from the Classic Rock band (plus bonus material): Livin' On The Fault Line (1977) and Minute By Minute (1978). The Doobie Brothers were one of the most commercially successful bands of the 1970s, charting albums and singles around the world, with songs that are radio staples to this day. With principal songwriters Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons, and later Michael McDonald, the band incorporated an amazing array of musical styles, from Rock to R&B, via Country and Folk. The 24 page booklet features all the lyrics and musician credits, photos and annotation by Alan Robinson. Edsel.

UK released Monday 26 September 2011 as a 2CD set (4 Oct 2011 in the USA) - Edsel EDSD 2107 breaks down as follows...

Disc 1 (35:12 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 10 are their 7th studio album "Livin' On The Fault Line" (and 2nd with Michael McDonald in the line-up).
It was released September 1977 on Warner Brothers K 56383 in the UK - Warner Brothers BS 3045 in the USA

Disc 2 (45:52 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 10 are their 8th studio album "Minute By Minute" - a Number 1 record in the USA and a Grammy Winner in several categories.
It was released December 1978 on Warner Brothers K 56486 in the UK - Warner Brothers BS 3193 in the USA
Tracks 11 and 12 are bonus tracks - "Here To Love You" (Single Remix) and "What A Fool Believes" (12" Remix)

The booklet is a great deal more substantial than what's gone before - 24-pages of original album artwork (including inner sleeves), UK and European labels pictured, the lyrics, musician credits and an informative 6-page history by ALAN ROBINSON on both albums and their impact. It's superbly done. But the really big news is the fabulous new SOUND...

I've had all of the 2006 Japanese Remasters (in 5" card repro sleeves) to have the music - but here the remaster by PHIL KINRADE at ALCHEMY in London is stunning and far better. The clarity is amazing. It helps of course that the original production on each album by Ted Templeman was so razor sharp in the first place (he's long been associated with the band and more famously with Van Halen).

These are two of my favorite albums by the Doobie Brothers, even though some think they are a bit on the light side. The remastering is fine, more detail and not as muffled as the original CD release. The liner notes are very well designed complete with musician detail and lyrics. The two bonus tracks on Minute By Minute are strangely good. They are single editions of two of their songs and I can just imagine hearing them again in 1979 on the AM radio in the third row seat of the station wagon.

"Fault Line" has long been a favorite of mine, and the sound quality on these releases is amazing. I'll be ordering the rest of the Doobies remastered catalog shortly - well worth the money.

Doobies took a new direction when Michael McDonald joined the group to replace Tom Johnson.. He bought the Steely Dan sound with him which took the groups' rock sound to a different plain.. The albums take some getting use to after their earlier releases.

After purchasing the Edsel remastering of "Captain and Me"/What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" (EDSEL 2105) and being absolutely thrilled with the sound, I felt comfortable purchasing this two CD set of the classic Doobie albums, "Livin' On the Fault Line" and "Minute By Minute". While not a huge fan of "Livin'...", there are some solid tracks that I really like, including, "You Belong to Me", "Echoes of Love", and "There's a Light". Each have a clear, crisp clarity that wasn't available in the original albums. Fans of this album will be impressed with the improvement. NOTE: My lack of appreciation for "Livin' on the Fault Line" is the only reason that I gave this CD set a four-star review instead of five. That's my issue, certainly not the album's.

My real reason for this purchase was to get the improved sound of "Minute By Minute". I was not disappointed! Michael McDonald and all the Doobies sound terrific and well-known hits like, "What a Fool Believes", "Sweet Feelin'", the title track, and especially "How Do the Fools Survive" (and its wonderful, two-minute, improvised Snake Baxter guitar solo) are all outstanding! When Patrick Simmons says "Spin it" to start "Steamer Lane Breakdown, you'll swear he's in the room with you. Great acoustics!

True fans of the band will want to add this CD (and probably the other three Edsel "remasters") to their collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
