Book Description

It's Halloween night in Lahaina, Maui, and the Mardi Gras of the Pacific is in full swing. But wedding planner Pali Moon isn't in costume--she's on a mission. A bridesmaid has vanished and Pali's canvassing Front Street, ducking into every overcrowded waterfront watering hole hoping to spot a girl with long red hair and a lingerie model's figure. No luck. Back at her car, Pali opens the door and finds the remnants of a bizarre trick or treat stunt. Turns out, Halloween in Lahaina isn't just a night for island high-jinx, it's also a night for vengeance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor & Hawai & a fun mystery April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Livin' Lahaina Loca by JoAnn Bassett

I first met Pali Moon and her pals in Maui Widow Waltz, liked it so much I eagerly agreed when this second in the series was offered to me for a read-review. Even the author's clever covers make me laugh! (Hint: Every book title is a take-off of song titles and they all relate to Hawaii.)
This time, Pali has lost her business lease at her old location above a local market due to a fire (Maui Widow Waltz) and now she's reduced to a tiny office above a smelly restaurant with a back alley entrance. She's still scraping by in a bad economy as a wedding planner, because weddings, no matter the economy, are still happening in Maui. Adding to the fun, there's Steve, Pali's sensible gay roommate, Hatch her hot fireman boyfriend from the last book , and Farrah, a beautiful plus size Hawaiian woman, and best friend any girl could possibly have.
Enter Keith and Nicole, two California book-ends with money to burn for their upcoming nuptials. Keith hands out cash like party favors and Nicole is true to form as another incredibly bitchy bride. Then one of the bridesmaids goes missing, and Pali, though worried that her reputation as a wedding planner would really take a hit if word got around she "...was on the grim reaper's speed dial," she also can't ignore the possibility that something bad has happened to the young woman.
Someone else obviously doesn't want her ignoring the situation either, because they've left the severed pony-tail of the young woman's hair in the backseat of Pali's car. Then a ransom note shows up on her car window, and oddly, the local police and the wedding couple ignore Pali's assertion that the girl has been kidnapped and may be murdered. They may ignore her, but Pali is determined to find the girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Halloween Trouble In Paradise December 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This series must be read in order. The first book is Maui Widow Waltz (Islands of Aloha Mystery Series #1).

I adore this series! Non-stop action and adventure peppered with thrills and chills keep readers on their toes and guessing from beginning to end trying to solve the latest mystery. Really never thought wedding planning could be this exciting (much less enthralling). By the time each book ends I am sad because that means the latest caper is over. Amazingly romance is on the back burner in this series almost like an afterthought and for some reason that works well here. Who could have guessed a series about a wedding planner could so effectively sideline romance and still be awesome? The characters' humor and dry wit make this series a comedic hit in my opinion .

New characters help the original characters which causes them to reach beyond their comfort zones and grow. A new wedding makes things hectic in the new shop during the busiest and craziest holiday (Halloween) on the islands. After the fire in the last book Moon has been forced to set up shop above a restaurant which brings it's own special set of problems... mainly a fishy smell and a rickety staircase in an alley. Pali has to work extra hard to impress clients as her shop is so unimpressive. I would recommend this series to Stephanie Plum fans. I can't wait for the next book!

***this series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this series of books. November 22, 2014

Very enjoyable mystery series. Nice contemporary action, personable characters and feel for daily island life. Makes me want to visit the Hawaiian islands or actually any islands. I recommend you read them in order of the series, I started with the 4th book before I knew they were a series and while it was still enjoyable once I went back and read from book #1 I realized some things in book #4 would have made more sense having known the backstory. Reading each book from this series is a nice little vacation from 35 degree winter chill in Georgia. Hope she writes more in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wedding Planner Mystery September 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Maui, Hawaii is a perfect place for a wedding and Pali is one of the Island's finest wedding planners. Pali puts her former Airline Marshall background and criminology skills behind her, to offer clients a fabulous and exclusive wedding with top notch professional planning.

Disaster strikes when a bridesmaid of one of her wealthy clients and the most expensive wedding Pali has done, is missing after a party. A series of bizarre personal items belonging to the bridesmaid are left behind for Pali. Her gut reactions and Homeland Security training kicks in to bring the reader an intense, exciting, and can't put down mystery.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed December 24, 2012

The story itself is okay, there are enough twists to keep it interesting. The problem is that for as long and drawn out as the story is, there is no real ending. It seems like the author just got tired of writing or couldn't come up with anything else, so she decided to make an epilogue, which wouldn't be so bad but for the fact that even the epilogue leaves you hanging. and not in a good way.

I am native Hawaiian, and I am fine with people writing fictional works based off of my homeland. But when Hawaiian words are misspelled I feel like the author didn't do enough research or the editors just got lazy. its supposed to be "E Komo Mai" not "E como Mai". there is no "C" in the Hawaiian language!!!
