Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Long-time readers of Groene books know that we lived full-time on the go for ten years. As happily homeless travelers we have made a living as a travelwriter and photographer team. For ourselves and others like us, things have changed dramatically. Prices for fuel, campsites and food have risen. Communications are now a snap thanks to the Internet, Skype, smart phones and other technologies. Homeschooling has become common. Opportunities for making a living on the road, and even raising a family along the way, have skyrocketed, allowing more younger families to become full-timers.  If you haven't read the new (4th) edition of our book, you're missing these important changes.

About the Author

Janet Groene writes several columns that run monthly in Family Motor Coaching magazine (145,000 members of FMCA) and in Trailblazer (sent to members of Outdoors Resorts and other membership campgrounds.) Janet has loyal followers for her blogs on travel, RV cooking, boat cooking and SoloWomanRV. She holds the Distinguished Achievement in RV Journalism Award and is a member of the American Society of Journalists & Authors and the Society of American Travel Writers. She works fulltime as a freelance travel writer. She and her husband own a 21-foot, fully self-contained, diesel Class C motorhome.

Don't be fooled by the title of this book. Don't even be fooled by the dust jacket blurbs! This book isn't just for full-timing in an RV, it's about practical advice on owning any RV. From what to do to your dishes as you roll down the road to engines. The tips and hints abound in this well thought out book.

This book was a waste of time and money. The topics are shallow and agenda driven and for the most part left us with negative feelings about RV living. For example, it is obvious that the author dislikes pets and even makes the statement, "Many campgrounds won't admit pets at all". This statement is misleading and disengenious because the exact opposite is true. Infact, to find an RV park that won't accept pets is difficult. The Baby Boomer Generation likes their pets and the RV park owners, in a competitive business, know it. The author also goes on an environmental rant about strict do's and don't's. She even makes the nonsense statement, "And don't tie anything to them (trees) either, because even the smallest abrasions can create voids where bugs or disease can get a foot hold". Makes you wonder how these delicate trees survived several million years of fire, wind, animals and other onslaughts. This book could have been full of helpfuls hints such as using a portable propane stove for outdoor cooking of odorous foods like bacon or fish thereby sparing the confines of your RV, but it doesn't. We were left with such negative feelings from the book that we decided to not give it to some friends of ours who are new to RV'ing. We didn't want to turn them off to the experience.

More technical than other RV books but a must have for those just getting into the RV experience. There was so much in this book we hadn't even thought of before reading it.

Ms. Groene is a generous writer who has shared her tips on traveling for many years. She has a wonderful rescue dog and provides lots of insights if you are thinking of RVing. She even has a blog for women thinking of doing it alone called SoloWomanRV.blogspot.com.

This book covers every possible issue to GREAT detail. It's a truly great resource for anyone in late stages of going "fulltime". Every option/consideration/choice is presened for every issue. Study these contents carefully and you will NOT overlook an important issue.

The author makes a point of NOT guiding your choices because everyone's situation and preferences are different ... except to make known the choice the author made, but his situation was rather unique and so were his choices. But the "list" of issues and factors to consider for each are the crux of what you must do before taking that "fulltime" leap ... and it's all here.
