5.0 out of 5 stars at CVS for $10
I'm not a kid, but this did appeal, and it was inexpensive at $9.99.
For what it is, it's well made and it is bright and cheering,
and not really realistic, of course. However, the Living Aquarium
is a resting point for tired eyes to wander into after looking for too long
at the close-up computer screen.

I've set the aquarium up in...

1.0 out of 5 stars DANGEROUS
This product caught fire in our sons' room. It was kept on a nightstand in between their two beds. If we hadn't been there when it happened, both of them could have been seriously injured as their bedroom went up in flames.

I don't want you to take this lightly. There were actual flames coming from the sides. This is very dangerous.

1.0 out of 5 stars FIRE!!!, July 30, 2009
This review is from: Living Aquarium Light Lamp Tropical Fish Ocean Water Home Decor (Kitchen)
This light started a fire in my daughters room!!! The motor seized causing the whole piece to ignite and spread. It was the middle of the night. Fortunately, our smoke detectors worked and we had a fire extinguisher. BUT our house is uninhabitable from smoke damage. We were lucky. Don't take a chance.

I've set the aquarium up in my room's background--ten feet in the distance behind my monitor.
I find this eases eyestrain brought on by hours at the computer.
The aquarium sort of reminds one to look at it at intervals.

Construction: Good, simple, not high tech: a crystal clear, wavy-lenticular polycarbonate
case contains a five watt circular fluorescent bulb,
revealed by removing two screws from the top.

Inside are two two rollers, the two strips of acetate film
and a dead-silent gearmotor to drive one of the roller--
the other roller being an idler.
This is all on an old principle. Given its silence and its brightness,
it's all that could asked for.

From a distance, in a dimmed room it is particularly striking.

I find the Living Aquarium an excellent value in a novelty with a purpose,
at the price I paid for it at the local CVS pharmacy in late January 2008.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply made, but it works..., August 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son has had a different brand of aquarium motion lamp (much nicer) hanging on his wall for the last year. When it finally died, I ordered this item as a replacement. It is VERY cheap and plastic looking, and when I just turned it on to test it out, I can hear the paper background crinkling and turning as it moves. I can also clearly see the seam in the background.

It will probably be ok in the dark for my son's nightlight, but I am not expecting it to last more than a few months. Don't pay more than $10 for this item, or you will have been BADLY ripped off.

I guess you get what pay for, but I didn't expect this to be THIS bad. Really cheap plasticy material. You can HEAR the paper inside going around. Should have just gotten her a lava lamp like she asked for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful focal point, February 1, 2009
This review is from: Living Aquarium Light Lamp Tropical Fish Ocean Water Home Decor (Kitchen)
When I bought this aquarium for my mother, she had been living with Alzheimer's for many years. When she reached the point where TV was no longer meaningful, I purchased this aquarium to give her a pleasant focal point. It ran continually for months, and while the fish no longer moved at a certain point, the light stayed on. This also gave a gentle light to her room during the night.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected, March 23, 2009

I am very disappointed in this lamp. The fish do not move around as I expected & the top part of the lamp has turned dark. It is really true, you get what you pay for & this is very cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product- DON'T confuse it w/ "Discovery Kids", February 2, 2010
This review is from: Living Aquarium Light Lamp Tropical Fish Ocean Water Home Decor (Kitchen)
This is a very nice item to have in your bedroom, even for an adult. It's just relaxing to look at, and makes a perfect nightlight to fall asleep to.

Mine lasted a few months of being on almost continuously, until the motor wore down and began making a grinding noise. So I looked around the stores for another one.

I found a similar, but not identical item at another store. It had "Discovery Kids" on it, rather than "Living Aquarium". However, the DK one was complete junk. The rotating belt scratched against the rollers and made constant distracting noise right out of the box.

While I've read some reviews on this page citing loud noise and even fires, this may (or may not) be a mix up with the Discovery Kids model. They're very similar outside and mechanically inside, but I've had no problems with the "Living Aquarium" model. Actually, I just took the fresh motor out of the DK and put it in the LA and it works like new and I'm quite happy about this. It's hard to find these in stores except near the holidays.

So I'd still recommend buying this particular product, though be cautious just in case.

I bought this from CVS for $10 as a stocking stuffer for my 2yo son. He loves it :) Best $10 I spent this Christmas.
Very simple design - endless loop style, and the fish appear to be "moving" as the plexiglass front is a wavy design.

Beware- I have seen numerous fire hazard warnings from other owners who've found out the hard way. I won't let my kids use it as a nightlight for this reason.
