About the Author

Mark Getlein arrived in New York to pursue advanced music studies at the Juilliard School, but he quickly became equally fascinated by the city's vibrant downtown art scene and magnificent museum collections. For a decade or so he led an interesting but precarious life as a pianist and painter. As a writer and development editor, he has helped to create a series of ground-breaking college textbooks in art and literature, including Art History (Abrams, 1995), A History of Art in Africa (Abrams, 2001), The HarperCollins World Reader, The Longman Anthology of British Literature, and The Longman Anthology of World Literature. This is his fourth edition as author of Living with Art.

This is a pretty interesting book as far as textbooks go. However, if you're considering buying this book, be aware that the 8th and 7th versions are nearly identical to this one- and they probably cost a good $100 less. The only real difference is the pictures inside- some of them seem to change depending on the edition. A resourceful student could easily google a famous work of art that the teacher mentions in class- if a piece is famous enough to be mentioned in a textbook, someone's probably posted a picture of it on the Internet. Don't waste your money on a new book if you can easily score an older one.

Having taught art appreciation well over thirty times, I have come to rely on this text. Looking at the competition, it is the only book that covers everything. Living with Art is digestible for my students, witty enough for the seasoned professional in me and makes it easy to cover aesthetics, design principles, media and a brief history of art... all in one term. My favorite component is Connect Art. With Connect, I am able to present even more information via this online component, as well as, track my students' progress between exams. Because of the tailored online Connect exercises, my exam scores and final averages have improved as much as 15 per cent. I highly recommend this text.

I got this for an Art 101 class I am taking and honestly I am very surprised. For a textbook, it is remarkably easy to read, informative and interesting. I love how the author draws the reader in with numerous examples and of course photos of different art works. He covers many different topics. This book is really a joy to read. It is helping me knowledge of art expand so much.

You will get great appreciation and understanding of art on so many levels. This goes a little beyond just liking what you see, you get to understand why you like or dislike what you see: you get to understand symbolism, techniques, affects, form, color arrangements, style, etc.

You may say, "I can do a Pollock", you be able to do one, but he came up with the concept and he has claim to that. You may not like Marcel Duchamp's urinal, but you will understand why that piece is art. And, you will infer as to why some art pieces are over-rated and sold for millions as opposed to real master pieces not recognized.

Yeah, it's a good book.

this is an earlier edition of the required text for my intro to visual arts class; this book turns me off all but completely to the study of art. The positive is that the chapters and sections flow identical to the newer edition so essentially it's the same material for 1/10 the cost. Personally I enjoy having all of my textbooks versus selling my books back- the less I have to pay the better.

I needed this book for a class and was thrilled to find it on Amazon "used" for much less than what the bookstore was offering it for.

I am loving this class and the book is put together perfectly for the amateur art appreciator or student. I will not be selling this book back as I want to keep it to look through for years to come.
