A completely up-to-date guide for children with asthma as well as the parents of sufferers, this wealth of information is laid out in an easily accessible manner. The authors are realistically hopeful, while being straightforward about the disease.

Gr. 4^-6. Unlike Weiss' Breathe Easy , this is not a self-help book. It doesn't, for example, explain relaxation or breath control techniques. It does, however, present a wealth of valuable information about the physical and emotional aspects of asthma that can help sufferers and their families and friends better understand the condition. The tone is encouraging but also sober--there's plenty about the pros and cons of medication and the potentially serious consequences of the illness. The writing style is less formal than is usual for this writing team: comments from young people and anecdotes about people coping with the condition are a big part of the book. As explorations of health issues for middle-schoolers go, this is one of the best. Unfortunately, the unattractive jacket does nothing to herald the abundance or quality of the information inside.
