Book Description

December 22, 1999
"A youthful glow, skin that's soft to the touch, luster-rich hair, strong, healthy nails, a serene spirit, and a nourished soul...the answer for true beauty is here for each of us no matter what our age. It's only a matter of understanding how to create it."

Beauty is more than skin deep--our appearance reflects our inner health. The beauty problems we see in the mirror can result from hormonal imbalances, toxins, stress, and dietary deficiencies that cosmetics can't mask. Respected nutritionist and bestselling author Ann Louise Gittleman has developed seasonal diets to cleanse the body's systems and allow us to look our very best, accompanied by a unique test to help you determine which tips will enhance your "seasonal beauty type" year-round. Her straightforward advice can be used for three days to two weeks to clear out your own toxic blocks to beauty. In addition, Gittleman provides unique information and specific regimens for each hormonal stage of a woman's life, from adolescence through adulthood

The Living Beauty Detox Program is sound science based on Ann Louise Gittleman's years of study and reserach at Columbia University, the Pritikin Longevity Center, and her own practice. She presents the beauty fundumentals every woman needs to maintain a healthier, more radiant appearance. Understanding the essentials of detoxification and learning to read the body's beauty and health signals are the first steps. A balanced, fruit- and vegetable-rich diet, including powerhouse proteins and healing oils and supplemented with revitalizing vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and purified water, improves the functioning of the body's internal systems, and helps rid it of harmful pollutants. Seasonal maintenance protects and regenerates the body inside and out, while clearing away mental, emotional, and spiritual blocks in order to reduce stress and help restore hormonal balance and outward radiance.

From teens seeking to build a strong foundation for beauty to women in their 30s and 40s who wish to maintain a youthful appearance and women 50 and beyond who want to rejuvenate their looks, The Living Beauty Detox Program offers outward beauty and inner harmony for a lifetime.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Protecting our beauty begins in our youth and continues throughout every age and stage of life," says Anne Louise Gittleman, author of Beyond Pritikin, Super Nutrition for Menopause, and several other books. The answer, however, isn't anything you can buy at the cosmetics counter. "The right nutrition, internal cleansing, and hormonal harmony are the pathways to attaining natural beauty and vitality," says Gittleman. Following her program is not an easy task--you'll be carting supplements from the health food store and warily reading ingredient labels on every item that comes into your house or near your face. Her Living Beauty regimen is based on seven "beauty fundamentals":
  • a cleansed, detoxed system
  • purified water
  • powerful proteins
  • beautifying oils
  • energizing, immune-boosting veggies and fruits
  • revitalizing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
  • balanced hormones
Her major recommendation is to undergo a "seasonal cleanse" four times a year--not a fast, but a diet rich in lean protein, certain oils, and seasonal, organic fruits and vegetables; eliminating sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and white-flour products; and taking herbal teas, cranberry juice, and a "super green food supplement." Each season gets its own chapter with its own specific food choices. Gittleman also gives detailed beauty tips for different life stages, strategies for detoxifying your emotions, and chemicals to avoid in cosmetics and household products. --Joan Price

More About the Author

VISIONARY, HEALTH GURU, weight loss/detox expert, and natural foods icon, Ann Louise Gittleman has always been a trendsetter. Highly respected as a health pioneer and award-winning author of 30 books, she revolutionized weight loss in her New York Times bestseller The Fat Flush Plan - and now tackles the hazards of being bombarded 24/7 by electromagnetic pollution in her latest book Zapped. Ann Louise has been recognized as one of the top ten nutritionists in the country by Self and received the American Medical Writers Association award for excellence.

Always ahead of her time, Ann Louise set the pace for new health protocols in the 1990s with four more breakthrough books. She was the first to warn of the environmental hazards of parasites in her classic Guess What Came to Dinner? Parasites and Your Health. In Your Body Knows Best, Ann Louise was the first to discuss the blood type/weight theory and proclaim that one diet may not be right for every body − an idea that is only now becoming mainstream. She was the first to offer natural remedies for menopausal symptoms in Super Nutrition for Menopause and is widely credited as the first to popularize the term "perimenopause" in her New York Times bestseller, Before the Change.

Ann Louise forged new ways of thinking about obesity early on in her career. She was the first to proclaim that obesity was caused by the lack of dietary fats and the wrong kind of carbohydrates in her book Beyond Pritikin, published in 1988. In Beyond Pritikin, she predicted that the fat-free, carb-rich diet was creating weight gain, sugar cravings, fatigue and diabetes.

The bestselling author of The Fat Flush Plan has turned her attention to the hazards of the wireless age with her newest release--Zapped: Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution (HarperOne, 2010).

Praise for Zapped:

"Dr. Gittleman provides a cogent, sobering look at the effects of ever present electromagnetic pollution on our biology and clear, practical advice on how to minimize our exposures and our risk. Please follow her advice, it may save your life and give you renewed energy."

--Mark Hyman, MD, New York Times best-selling author of The UltraMind Solution and How to Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First

"Zapped is an empowering guide that will help you transform your body and your home into a sanctuary of health and healing."

--John Gray, PhD, author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus

"The book caught my attention immediately because I've been reading about, studying, and writing about the effects of electropollution for several years. This book just adds further confirmation that we live in an 'electropolluted' world, and we need to protect ourselves the best we can... You can learn many, many more simple and more in-depth tips on how to protect yourself by reading Zapped."

--Susan Lark, MD, author of Hormone Revolution and editor of Women's Wellness Today

"You are being 'Zapped' whether you know it or not! When artificial and manmade frequencies from cellphones, wireless computers, and cordless phones constantly bombard your system, they alter the body's natural electromagnetic balance and affect DNA, organs, and glands. Packed with scientific backup, find out what you can do about electropollution--a public health concern more insidious than cigarettes, asbestos, and HRT combined. The life you save may be your own--and your loved ones."

--Hyla Cass, MD, author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health and former Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine

4.0 out of 5 stars But have you tried it?, November 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's Life (Hardcover)
I had amazing success with the program presented in this book. In two weeks, I lost 16 pounds, my skin cleared up, my eyes got brighter, my hair got shinier and bouncier, my energy level shot way up, and I just felt great. Gittleman's ideas are revolutionary, as well as biologically accurate. However, since I am HUMAN, I have to say that it is very difficult to follow the program for a longer duration (see the maintenance section). The foods are not altogether tasty, and there are no real allowances given for situations such as eating out, parties, holidays, etc. I think that in order for someone to follow this program and also have a truly diverse diet, one would need to do additional research. While I had great success during the two week detox period, I had a great deal of trouble integrating the maintenance portion with my every day life. Also, like many diets, it assumes the ability to cook every meal at your own kitchen, which is not usually the case for those of us who work and have busy, active lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - A BEAUTIFUL BOOK THAT HAS IT ALL - DIET AND DETOX!, February 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's Life (Hardcover)
I first read about Ann Louise's Two Week Fat Flush on iVillage where it was getting over 5 million hits a month. I tracked the program down to The Living Beauty Detox Program and am so happy I did. This program and her seasonal detox programs really work. I have been on the Two Week Fat Flush for 10 days and plan to continue it for another 10 days. My inches have come off my tush and buttocks - places where I could never reduce before. Besides, I am not hungry and am not EVEN TEMPTED by sweets anymore. I am a true believer and hope this woman does news letters in the future.

My husband bought this book for me for my birthday. I have been doing the Two Week Fat Flush in preparation for the Spring Cleanse. I have lost 5 inches from my thighs so far. I AM NOT EVEN LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO EAT, WHAT A MIRACLE. I keep this book next to my bed because the quotes in front of each chapter are so inspiring. Well Done..
