Book Description

January 1999 7 and upLiving with (Raintree Steck-Vaughn)
Explaining why some people are blind; the range of the word "blindness", from being slightly impaired to total blindness; the difference between going to a mainstream or a special school, and how blind people manage, this book shows readers through four case studies, that it is often society , not blind people's condition, that limits them. This book has been checked and endorsed by the RNIB and included is a list of useful addresses and organisations.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-These volumes introduce readers to people with disabilities and show how they go about their everyday lives. Haughton offers a simple explanation of the anatomy of the ear to help children understand various types of hearing loss and their causes, from infection to fluid in the ear. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, and TTYs are described, as are various methods of communication, such as sign language, finger spelling, and lip reading. Westcott gives a brief explanation of how the eye normally functions and looks at some of the causes of visual impairment, such as cataracts, disease, glaucoma, and other conditions. Many aids are described, such as talking kitchen scales, large-print keypads, and mugs that beep when filled. Full-color photos appear throughout both of these attractive and accessible introductions.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY

4.0 out of 5 stars Living with Blindness - Living Blind in a Sighted World, March 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Living with Blindness (Living with (Raintree Steck-Vaughn)) (Library Binding)
Having spent this, my first year in college, volunteering with two newly-blind individuals, this book was a welcome addition to my makeshift repertoire of ways to help my elderly friends live freely despite their disability. The book includes great ideas for mobilizing blind individuals, increasing access to household objects and appliances, and generally instilling in them once again the feeling of self-sufficiency they lost with their sight.
