Duke Robillard - Workin' Hard For My Uncle

Biography

America’s most versatile guitarist and his band peel back the years to deliver a gritty tribute to the early heroes of R&B

Looking back, it was one of the most exciting eras of American music. Tiny independent R&B labels put out jukebox singles with infectious riffs, shouted vocals, honking tenor sax solos and dance grooves that electrified black America’s clubs, bars and backyard BBQs.
And now Duke… Read more in Amazon's Duke Robillard Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Roomful of Blues founding guitarist Duke Robillard initially signed to Canadian label Stony Plain with the intention of playing more straightforward music, to stick to the blues, instead of the musical mélange that had long been his specialty. But his 2002 outing for the label, Living with the Blues, shows that when Robillard immerses himself in a genre, he still can't help exploring that genre's stylistic variety. This album includes everything from the Freddie King tune "Use What You Got," performed with a taut intensity reminiscent of Muddy Waters, to a delta-inflected Tampa Red song, "Hard Road," to the funk-edged "Goodtime Charlie." Robillard has been highly praised in blues circles for many years, especially after embarking on his solo career in 1990. He performs all the above with the apparent ease that mastery allows. While Living with the Blues is often determinedly low-key, Robillard's enthusiasm and imagination shine through with a soft, consistent glow. --Genevieve Williams

4.0 out of 5 stars Living With the Blues, my review from Barcelona, May 17, 2007
This review is from: Living With the Blues (Audio CD)
This is a very good record by one of the current best guitar players and blues musicians. Here Duke devotes most of his time to received repertoire, offering as always first-class playing. He covers magnificently songs from B. B. King, Guitar Slim, Freddie King and also an unplugged version of a slide guitar master Tampa Red's "Hard Road". The record also contains a very attractive cover of Willie Dixon's "I live the life I love", first recorded by Muddy Waters, who made it one of this classic tunes. The title record song "Living with the Blues", besides being a great tune by Brownie McGhee, is an appropriate title for this album. It is of course very hard to say who my favourite guitarist is, because there are several players who can qualify depending of the moment, but I'm sure DUKE ROBILLARD is one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Fan, April 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Living With the Blues (Audio CD)
Being familiar with Roomfull of Blues and the Thunderbirds, I decided it was time to hear what Duke's been up to as of late.
I had my a$$ kicked pleasantly, with this new offering.
Nothing trendy, nothing typical - Duke plays with flash, enthusiasm and a style all his own. The range of this compilation is terrific - from his originals to some lesser known blues standards, Duke funkifies, R&B-ifies and plain ol' blues-ifies this CD with his signature. Strongly suggest this one, regardless of your exposure to the blues.
