Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Series titles that discuss a condition or disease through the stories of children experiencing it. In simple language, each book gives a rudimentary explanation of the condition and describes how it affects the child, treatment, and school and home life. Each topic is addressed on a two-page spread; a few of the discussions end abruptly and may leave readers with questions. The four children highlighted in Cerebral Palsy range in age from 9 to 18 and are affected in varying degrees by this disease. The three youngsters in Leukemia are 14, 10, and 5; two are in remission. In both volumes, the diagrams are clear and easy-to-understand and the full-color photographs show the children at the doctor's office, in the hospital, and at school and home. The people are primarily Caucasians. Some of the same material is covered in "The Need to Know Library" series (Rosen), which is for an older audience.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY
