3.0 out of 5 stars Approach with caution
This review is written well in advance of the actual release date, but I would warn all potential buyers to approach this one with caution. This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
For everyone wondering if Ugly Wanda is in the season 3 set, the answer is YES.

In Living Color Season 3 adds Jamie Foxx, Steve Park, and Shawn Wayans to the cast. Jennifer Lopez joined the fly girls, and DJ Twist is the new DJ to replace Shawn Wayans. Damon leaves the show at the end of the third season to pursue other opportunities. The show also opens with a new opening sequence and a new song by Heavy D.

There are some great skits I've had fun seeing again, but Season 3 DVD release of In living Color has a LOT of skits missing, and I'm very disappointed how the number of skits missing seem to increase. I feel it's cheating fans of the show that were looking forward to seeing those skits they remember when the show aired on Fox. There are a few episodes where the show introduction is starting, but you hear applause. The opening skit was cut out.

Some of the missing skits:
Crown Heights story
Prison Cable Network
Lizzy's
The Jackson Bunch
Paula Abdul skits
David Duke skit
Darnel Bond skit
Connie Chung - Me want Maury (I remember this skit, and it was hilarious)
Rice Cube
Career Aid
One Night Stand
Anton Gets Rich
Rescue Whenever
Michael Bolton
Chrystal Waters
LL Cool J
Vanilla Ice(from season 2)

The musical parodies are very funny, and having them missing on the DVD set is very much a disappointment. I recall when they had an episode devoted to the musical parodies, and I was really hoping it would be on the set.

There are some great skits that made me want to keep rewinding the DVD and watching them over and over again. Ugly Wanda is one of them. When Jamie joins the cast of In Living Color he does a couple of skits as Ugly Wanda and he is hilarious!!! Ugly Wanda on the dating game, and Ugly Wanda on the blind date. Watching Jamie Foxx wear that blond wig, and him do his lips in that funny way is so hilarious. The interaction between Foxx and Tommy Davidson made for much laughter. "I got you, I have you, you mine." "I will Rock your world." One of my favorite lines "I thought you said you look like Vanna White, you look like Slappy White!!", as Tommy tries to get away from Wanda in his leopard draws.

Jim Carrey doing a skit as Pee Wee Herman and talking about the Pee Wee Doll with Trubo fist by Sleazo is funny also. Misery II with Keenan Ivory Wayans as Rick James. Plenty of Homey D. Clown, Men On, Head Detective, Benita Butrell, Funky Finger Productions, Snack and Shack, and Fire Marshall Bill skits all through out the season. I was very excited to see the super bowl halftime special on the set. Jamie Foxx doing the Prince Skit in the Butt Out Jeans. I had totally forgotten about that skit, and it was great to see again. Jamie was great imitating Prince.

I enjoyed the skit with Hey Mon. The Hardest working Jamaican family is doing battle with the hardest working Asian family. Vera DeMilo doing the steroids ad, "Live fast, die young and pretty." I chuckle thinking about it. The Home Alone again skit was so good to watch. Tommy Davidson plays Micheal Jackson and Jonathan Taylor Thomas is playing the Macauly Culkin role.

Sam and Samantha Kinison skit had me doubled over and wiping my eyes because I laughed so hard watching that skit. Kelly Coffield really held her own against Sam Kinison. When they show the baby and he says "I will be in rehab before Kindergarten, I want to go back, I want to go back." I'm gasping for air because of all the laughing I'm doing. During the Star Trek skit the stand out lines "We are approaching Senility", "Damn it Jim, I'm a corpse not a doctor!"

Last Man on Earth is another hilarious skit. Poor guy thought he would have all those women, and they only made him do chores, and made him dance for them, wearing pasties!!!

My Favorite Skits:
1. Prince Butt Out Jeans
2. Background Guy
3. Hey Mon
4. Fire Marshall Bill on a cruise
5. Construction Guys
6. Coyote Ugly Escape Kit
7. Minute Maiden drink
8. Men on Film Part 2
9. Vera DeMilo (Steroid Ad)
10. Home Alone Again
11. Environment Guy
12. Sam & Samantha Kinison
13. Timbuks
14. Bill Benson - Game Show Hosts
15. Wilt Chamberlin Wall
16. My Left Foot of Fury
17. Frenchie invades Alcoholics Anonymous
18. Anton and the Reporter
19. The Cosby Condom
20. All the Wanda Skits
21. Handi Man & the Tiny Avenger
22. Frenchie in Lamaz Class
23. Grim Reaper on Vacation
24. Star Trek VII - the really Last Voyage
25. Men on Football
26. Cape Fear II
27. Hour of Power Preachers on Trial
28. The Fist that rocks the cradle - Vera Demilo
29. Club Ozone
30. Anton and Rita get a green card.
31. Fast Food
32. Homey as the substitute teacher
33. Testers choice - parodies Fatal Attraction
34. 100,000 Pyramid - Tom and Tom
35. Last Man on Earth
36. Cousin Elsee
37. Les and Wes

There are a ton of skits that will have you howling with laughter. The Bloopers episode is also very, very funny. There are tons of musical guest, that show up to perform at the end of the show. Kriss Kross performing Jump, Nice and Smooth, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Big Daddy Kane, Color Me Bad (whatever happened to them?). Eric B. and Rakim, Shabba Ranks and Maxi Priest, Black Sheep, and Heavy D. & The Boys.

Due to the missing skits, I'm having to rate Season 3 a tad lower than I rated season 1 and 2. In Living Color Season 3 is still a good set to own to add to your DVD collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Approach with caution, February 20, 2005

This review is written well in advance of the actual release date, but I would warn all potential buyers to approach this one with caution. There was plenty of controversy over the season 2 box set, because the Vanilla Ice parody had been cut and the music to the Fly Girls numbers was changed (to some generic dance music). Apparently, Fox couldn't -- or wouldn't -- pay for the copyright to the music. If this problem continues with the season 3 set, it will mean major changes, since many of the episodes in the third season began with music video spoofs. At this point, it isn't clear if the music-video parodies will be edited out. I wouldn't buy the set until someone has had a chance to review it.

2.0 out of 5 stars So, so disappointed!, May 10, 2005
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
Those looking to buy this Season 3 boxed set primarily for the music parodies will be sorely disappointed. Episode 29, the Downtown Julie Brown's Music Video Special which featured Jim Carrey as Michael Bolton and Vanilla Ice, Tommy Davidson as Michael Jackson as well as Jamie Foxx as Prince is conspicuously missing. Ironically, the cover art has a picture of Foxx in his Prince garb which leaves a lot to be desired. What a disappointment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Greatly Disappointed, May 11, 2005
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
OK, I bought it hoping to see Michael Jackson busting his hand on a car, I think it was after the song Black or White, my favorite skit ever, not on the disk at all. Seriously why would we want an edited DVD Box Set, or are they going to try to make us by a special In Living Color Music DVD? I think people should boycott buying this DVD set until fox gets things right, I wish I had not bought mine

4.0 out of 5 stars Why are music parodies missing ?, April 22, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
"In Living Color - Season 3" is full of hilarious skits by a very talented cast. I am very disappointed, though, that this is NOT the complete season. The packaging is very misleading. FOX has "edited out" the music parodies and some skits. The music parodies were some of the funniest skits on the show. If music parodies and skits are missing this information should be on the packaging. I have purchased all 5 Seasons of In Living Color and have enjoyed all of them. But I am frustrated that I have paid for all 5 Seasons and am not able to enjoy some of my favorite skits and music parodies because they are missing. I was relieved to read other reviews and find out that I am not the only person upset with FOX for cutting corners on these boxed DVD sets. Hopefully FOX will listen to the complaints and release a DVD set with all the music parodies. I remember an entire episode that was all music video parodies. This episode had a parody of "Downtown Julie Brown" from MTV hosting a show of various videos. It was hilarious !!! I am glad to discover from other reviews that BET is showing re-runs of In Living Color. I plan to record these episodes and hopefully obtain the missing skits and video parodies. I have eagerly awaited each seasons release and feel cheated that skits and music parodies are missing. In Living Color was such a brilliant show with so many talented actors in its cast. Each and every skit is part of the history of this ground breaking show.

2.0 out of 5 stars Severly Edited, May 7, 2005
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
I just purchased this item and went directly to the episode with Michael Jackson and this episode is only 15:00 minutes in length total! I will watch more but that kind of has my spirits down. That is probably why the price is lower than Season 3 because none of the original music (except guest performers at the end) or the music skits are in. Buy at your own risk!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Stripped, February 28, 2006
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
Unfortunately, Fox skimped on this set more than they did in season 2. Basically all the music video skits are removed. To me, they were the best part of the program. Without them, this INCOMPLETE season 2 is not worth purchasing. Fortunately, I had the forsite to rent them before purchasing, saving myself some valuable money that is better spent on blank VHS tapes to record the unedited versions off of TV.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hated it.............Just tape it on BET and save over $30!!, November 26, 2005
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
We got some great heavy weights such as all the Wanda skits, Homey The Clown kindergarden substutute, Home Alone Again with Michael Jackson, all The Men on Films, Hey Mon, Prince: Butt Out Jeans, all the Funky Finger Production skits ("He hasn't called me....BAM!!), Lashawn ("Why come they runnin' round like they saw a special at K'Mart"), and the sexy fly girls Lisa and the old J Lo. What really dissappointed me was all the cut outs such as my personal favorite Michael Jacksons' Black & White" (I'm a virgin and I'm 33" - lol). I paid $30 for this dvd and half the episodes were cut off (I do remember the LL Cool J and Paula Abdoul). BET now has In Livin' Color reruns and they do have all the skits originally aired from FOX without cuts. Save your money and tape the shows from there! They do not cut out many funny sketches as much as the next season on DVD so watch out for that too.

1.0 out of 5 stars False Advertising...? It Seems to be Spreading. We Need to Stop This!, June 28, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
This review has nothing to do with the show, per se. It has to do with an inceasingly prevalent technique of editing out portions of the show in question, due primarily, to music rights.

Nowhere on the DVD box does Fox say that the shows are edited. Of course, they'll claim that nowhere does it say the set contains the original broadcast episodes. Bottom line, this is misleading. If I'm going to spend good money buying series that I remember to be funny/serious/enthralling, etc., I want to buy that series, not some post-edited version - I can get that on TV. This bothered me some with the release of "Tour of Duty." Now it bothers me a whole lot more to see the "technique" spreading.

Bottom line, what can we do to voice our displeasure...? Should we ask Amazon (who now probably has enough clout) to demand studios disclose that series/shows are not the original broadcast episodes (they make a big deal of adding content, how about making them disclose edited content)? Should we then demand Amazon state on the product listing that the series has been edited...?

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll wait and see... hopefully it'll be worth 5 stars..., February 24, 2005
This review is from: In Living Color - Season 3 (DVD)
Not happy with the season 2 release, I'm hoping FOX will have picked up on consumers' complaints about cutting out certain music-related skits.

I recall, from original transmission, that season 3 was much funnier than season 2. And who can't like the Michael Jackson skits (both musical and parody)? :-) "Home Alone 3", as I recall, was nonstop hysterics as the ILC cast lampoon Michael Jackson as if there was no tomorrow and it's just as fresh today as it was 13 years ago. Yipes, 13 years already!

But as has been said, season 3 contains numerous music video parody skits. The Michael Jackson, LL Cool JJ, and Crystal Waters skits easily being the funniest of the lot and it would be a downright shame to not see them on the season 3 set. (if the Vanilla Ice was sorely missed from season 2, fans of ILC would be close to suicidal over the loss of season 3's music video parodies.)

Even without the video parodies, this season is definitely the funniest, if not as funny as season 1 and even surpassing it at times. However, if they chop out even one skit or cut a music act, that makes the set less than being a "full season". And for the prices these sets command, we as consumers have every right to expect a full set, uncut, with the original material intact. Anything else is an insult, pure and simple, and not worth our money.

I'm hoping that, when it comes time for me to revise this, I can give it a much more positive rating. Right now I'm forced to assume that season 3 will be given the same chop'em'up treatment as season 2. Which is sad for me to do, but as a consumer, and as a true fan of the show, I'm watching where my money goes. Real fans would withhold their funds and demand that a proper set be released before purchasing it rather than being treated like a starving jackal, settling for any rancid scrap thrown to them by the media zookeeper.
