Not what I expected,

This review is from: Living With a Deaf Dog: A Book of Advice, Facts and Experiences About Canine Deafness (Paperback)
This book, in my opinion, is more of a social illustration of the deaf dog rather than an aid to living with and training a deaf dog.Realistically, training a deaf dog is no different than a hearing dog, except you must use hand signals and you have to find an alternate way to get their attention.I think what the author was trying to do is great, but, except for some statistics and research articles, it was not very helpful to me in our daily life.In one particular case, the author's advice is downright dangerous if you are not an experienced dog handler. DO NOT EVER attempt "Alpha" rolls if you have a deaf and or aggressive dog!!!!!!DO NOT hit your dog with a newspaper!DO NOT hit your dog with your hands or anything else!Just a word of caution.....

Eh...kind of unnecessary.,
This review is from: Living With a Deaf Dog: A Book of Advice, Facts and Experiences About Canine Deafness (Paperback)
If you just adopted a deaf dog, it's nice to know that there are other people who have successfully trained deaf dogs. You'll get that from this book, but otherwise this book is kind of unnessary. There are online resources to get you started with training tips (like getting a deaf dog's attention by flicking the lights). But beyond that, training is just the same as with a hearing dog. I don't want to un-recommend it, but it's just not entirely necessary.

This book was a great first source in learning about deaf dogs. As a new adoptive owner of a deaf dog, I found it to be not only an excellent source of information, but also a source of hope and reassurance that that we can raise a deaf dog and deaf dogs can lead full lives given the opportunity. It is a must for anyone considering adopting a deaf dog or is new to training a deaf dog. I thank the author for providing this information and inspiration in a concise and clear format.

This book is without a doubt one of the most useful tools in helping owners of deaf dogs become the most effective partner in training with their pet. Dealing with a deaf dog is a life altering experience. The unconditional love, affection and sheer desire of the dog to please you is amazing. By taking on the training of a deaf dog with the help of this book anything is possible. As a "mom" to a deaf dalmatian, I encourage anyone living with or considering adding a deafie to their family to get a copy of this book and enjoy the rewards that come from raising a deaf dog.

A book to relate to!,

I adopted a puppy from the animal shelter about 3 months ago and about two weeks later realized she was deaf. This book helped me so much to just relate to the stories that other owners of deaf dogs wrote about how they interact with their dog and different ways to communicate with them. There is a very special bond already between myself and Winnie, because she doesn't hear, she is more in tune with my facial expressions and can sense my mood like no other dog I have ever owned. I have already taught her some of the different signs suggested in the book and we are learning more every day. I definitely recomend this book not only to those who have deaf dogs but to any dog owner!

This is the first book any owner of a deaf dog should get. It helps with the basics and helps you realize that your dog can live a normal life. Because of this book I took my dog to a dog trainer and my dog learned basic obedience along with all the hearing dogs. The trainer was wonderful about helping us. I also bought some sign language books to learn other signs to teach my dog also.

A must for anyone who has or will be getting a deaf dog.,

This review is from: Living With a Deaf Dog: A Book of Advice, Facts and Experiences About Canine Deafness (Paperback)
We purchased this book before we got our first deaf dog and read it on the way to rescue him. There are not may books available dealing with this subject since many deaf dogs are put down when it is discovered that they are deaf. This book was desperately overdue. Caring for a deaf dog is no small undertaking but is certainly rewarding. The author does an excellent job of describing what it is like to live with a deaf dog and how to handle training and other issues that arise while emphasizing the amount of work it takes. This book is a must for anyone who has or is considering rescuing a deaf dog.

Deaf Dog Books,

I was recently found out that my great dane has extreme hearing difficulties and will more than likely be totally deaf within a year. I looked for books regarding deaf dogs. There were not many out there. I purchased this book and it was a wonderful beginning. I have gone on to purchase a pocket dictionary of signing and am working my own signs in with my dog. I recommend anyone who is just starting out working with a deaf dog to read this book.

So much help!,
This review is from: Living With a Deaf Dog: A Book of Advice, Facts and Experiences About Canine Deafness (Paperback)
This book tremendously helped me understand my 3 yr. old deaf dog, Patch so much better. I didn't understand some of his behaviors and I could not find helpful books at the library. From the author's stories, tips, and advice, I have a much better understanding of what he goes through and why he exhibits some behaviors. I've had him for a year with trial especially with walking him. Since I've read this book, he and I have a much better understanding of each other. He is so willing to learn, the tips the author gave proved to be so useful! Great book! Thank you!

I bought and read this book as I was preparing to adopt my first deaf dog. Although it does not cover everything, it is a good foundation for understanding the subtle differences of deaf versus hearing dogs. The basics, such as "how to wake a deaf dog" are priceless when trying to create a calm, soothing environment for your dog. For the items, not covered in the book you will find resources in the appendix to assist. As with all dogs, each deaf dog is a little different from the others. It is a constant learning process and the best guides are the experiences of others.
