Gr 3-5-These volumes introduce readers to people with disabilities and show how they go about their everyday lives. Haughton offers a simple explanation of the anatomy of the ear to help children understand various types of hearing loss and their causes, from infection to fluid in the ear. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, and TTYs are described, as are various methods of communication, such as sign language, finger spelling, and lip reading. Westcott gives a brief explanation of how the eye normally functions and looks at some of the causes of visual impairment, such as cataracts, disease, glaucoma, and other conditions. Many aids are described, such as talking kitchen scales, large-print keypads, and mugs that beep when filled. Full-color photos appear throughout both of these attractive and accessible introductions.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY
