Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. (Let's Take a Trip Series). CIP. Troll. 1988. PLB $9.79; pap. $2.50. Grade 2-4 These books explore the redwood forest and the desert environment, focusing somewhat on the ecology of each. Both feature informative texts well-documented by clear, colorful photographs. Specific terms are explained both visually and verbally in the text; there is no glossary or index. The Redwood National Park in California is the setting of An Ancient Forest. Spencer addresses the geography, ecology, history, wildlife, and resources of the forest in a brief, introductory fashion. Jaspersohn's How the Forest Grew (Greenwillow, 1980; o.p.) describes the cycle of development for a similar age range and is more general, whereas this title is far more specific in area and treatment of the redwoods. Seasonal changes, natural features, and wildlife form the body of A Living Desert. The specific setting is the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. The unfamiliar javelina (wild swine) is not fully described. This book does capture the unique quality of the desert environment. These two books will serve as general introductions and as sources for very basic information for beginning report writers. Janie Schomberg, Edgerton Elementary School, Maplewood, Minn.

This review is from: Living Desert - Pbk (Paperback)
A good introduction to desert animals for younger readers.

And no, the book is not written by SF/F author Wen Spencer. It's written by Guy J Spencer.
