Antics of a frolicking raccoon! Raccoons are notorious for their mischief and 'streetwise' animal antics, but seldom has there been a raccoon that could match the career of Loony Coon. Life for the otters, geese, deer, skunks, and porcupines of the Campbells' wilderness home was always unpredictable when this bundle of energy was in town. So join in the fun, spills, and porcupine quills-the misadventures of Loony Coon -- told in the wonderful Sam Campbell styleEven skunks can teach lessons. Sam Campbell's Forest Life Books are known and loved by both children and adults. Now the "Philosopher of the Forest" has written Sweet Sue's Adventures for the younger children who love animals and the outdoors. In clear and concise language for the beginning reader, the author tells why a skunk behaves as he does, where he lives, whathe eats, and how he reacts to other forest animals. Come with Sam once again as he hikes and finds more wildlife adventure! Paperback, 119 pages. AB Publishing.

My teacher also read us the entire Sam Campbell series back in 1971, in a two-room schoolhouse in North Dakota. I couldn't wait until lunch recess was over to hear about another adventure with "Too Much Salt & Pepper", "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo, and Still-Mo", and all the other critters who took over Sam and Ginny's cabin on Sanctuary Lake. During those endless, icy winters, Sam Campbell filled our imagination with the scent of pine forests, endless warm summer days, and the beauty of the North Woods. The stories stayed with me and I vowed that someday I, like Sam and Ginny, would spend summer in a cabin on a lake, canoeing in a special place "somewhere east of sunset and somewhere west of dawn." Last summer, 40 years later, that dream became reality. That's the power of great writing.

Our three oldest and I enjoyed reading these books about thirty years ago. Then, some years later, I first read them to our youngest, and later she read them for herself with much delight. Now, as a young adult with a college degree and out in the working world, she got these books out on a recent visit home, rereading them with as much enjoyment as ever. "They are funny!", was her comment.

Indeed, they are. Sam Campbell's insightful description of the antiques of some of our little forest neighbors is very humorous.

I am pleased to see that these books are still in print and that they are available through Amazon.

Elementary teacher had read these to us in the 70's. Was so excited to see them available again so that I could read them to my children, ages 10 & 12, who really enjoy them.
Author Sam Campbell tells of his life experiences of observing and interacting with woodland creatures, such as racoons, porcupines, deer, birds, otters, etc. He and his wife, Giny, would live in a cabin on a small island in the northern country, during the summer. They would film the various wildlife and observe and record the natural actions of animals, as well as how they would interact with people and other animals in a non-hostile environment.

My teacher read these books to us, in a one-room schoolhouse in the Green Swamp in North Carolina. Though my swamp was far from the northern woods of Sam Campbell country, I was instantly transported there by his lively prose, sharing canoe rides with Mr. Campbell and his beloved Ginny.

He managed to convey a respect and responsibility toward the environment and a strong belief in God without preaching any specific religion or politics. His rapport with the creatures of his forest was unique, and we are blessed that he possessed a command of the written word so that we could know their stories. Sam Campbell is one the great storytellers of my childhood, one who no doubt had a part in my own compulsion to write about my Green Swamp.

This set of books about wildlife in the north woods is charming. I learn much about the natural habits and habitats of the animals and their interaction with the humans in the Sanctuary. After reading just one book, I decided to buy the set. I'd like to read some aloud to my grandchildren or leave them on the bookshelves when they come for vacation and have time to read. I'm on the third book myself, and I love the quietness and harmony of the life these men and women had while making friends of the animals in the Sanctuary. The books are timeless.

Both my 5-year-old granddaughter and I loved these books. I had purchased a single one months ago and we had been reading it together. I was excited that she loves them as I remember reading them when I was in 6th grade (she has a high reading level for her age) which was around 55 years ago. They are well-written and have a timeless quality. Any child who loves animals should love these books.

I grew up reading these stories and totally loved them, so I was very happy to find them again for my kids. We just finished reading Loony Coon, the story of a mischievous racoon family, and my boys ask for "just one more chapter" every day. They love these books, and I'm happy they have some good clean nature stories to read instead of all the junk that's published nowadays. :-)
