Truly Gives Hope,
By
This review is from: Living with a Functioning Alcoholic: A Woman's Survival Guide (Paperback)
Dr. Neill succeeds in writing a book primarily for women who live with an alcoholic. "Living with a Functioning Alcoholic" is not a book just about alcoholism. This book helps a woman decide if her partner is an alcoholic, how severe the partner's alcoholism is and what steps she needs to take to help her and her family. This book truly is a guide. There are questions at the end of each chapter to help a person relate what has been spoken of to her particular situation. Dr. Neill helps take away the hopelessness of being with an alcoholic partner by breaking down the steps of what can be done to help all involved. This book helped me to feel empowered and hopeful about help for alcoholics and their families!

Truly A Guide for All Women,
By
This review is from: Living with a Functioning Alcoholic: A Woman's Survival Guide (Paperback)
Dr. Neill's book, although for women who find themselves living with someone who is a functioning alcoholic, is actually a great book for every woman to read. Although my husband is not an alcoholic, I found this book to be very helpful. As women we have a certain way of thinking, which is sometimes to our detriment, but, after reading this book, I found what Dr. Neill had to say very applicable to many areas of my life. This is an exceptional book, and one that every woman, especially those living with an alcoholic should read.

I got this book after reading some articles on the internet by the author. There is a lot of information out there on this topic, but I found this book to be very helpful. I especially like the questions/assignments at the end of the chapters. It's real...not just a bunch of theory. It helped me determine that my husband is an alcoholic - I knew this already, but this book rationally helped me see this. And it told me what would work and what wouldn't.For those of you suffering, I offer some hope. My husband stopped drinking a year and a half ago with help from his doctor and a therapist. He wanted to - that is what made this happen. He relapsed for about a month recently but is back on track. There is hope. Take care of yourself...

I found this book to be very helpful in trying to deal with living with my alcoholic husband. Gave me great insight into his world and my world in dealing with this illness. I would recommend this book to other women who are struggling with living with a husband with this disease. Helped me realize what to do and not to do in the relationship. I got a lot of help and insight from reading this book.

Great Guide that focuses on the partner and not the problem drinker,
This review is from: Living with a Functioning Alcoholic: A Woman's Survival Guide (Paperback)
This book literally changed my life. While it contains a some information that may exist in some form elsewhere, the consolidation is great and the perspective (that it should focus on the partner and not the drinker) is spot-on and actually a lot more useful than I found any Al-anon meeting (where the focus is always on the drinker and seeing the partner as a victim). At times reading it, I literally felt like the author had to have been standing in the room and witnessing my interactions with my spouse. Until I read this book I actually felt like I was the reason he drank and that if he was only happier with me he would be fine. If you need perspective and a straightforward approach to dealing with an alcoholic in your life, read this book.

This review is from: Living with a Functioning Alcoholic: A Woman's Survival Guide (Paperback)
Dr. Neill's new book "Living with a Functioning Alcoholic" arrived in yesterday's mail, and I am absorbing every word. He did an excellent job. It is written from the heart of a man who has helped literaklly thousands in his practice, but more importantly, from the heart of a man who genuinely caresI heartily recommend this book to anybody...not just women...who wants to gain really practical suggestions about dealing with high functioning alcoholics and staying focused on your own recovery. Great book. I will be buying more copies for friends. Jody P. |
