Though Carmody is well known as a scholar and as an academic writer, this is not an academic book, but rather a popular devotional account that grows out of the author's encounter with terminal illness, particularly remission--an experientially based book that serves as a companion piece to two previous books on dying with God. Though the style is popular, Carmody's scholarship informs the work, which draws on a wide variety of religious traditions to illuminate thinking and feeling about God as well as working for and loving God. The theological progression is from reason through passion toward liturgy and prayer. Though Carmody speaks of struggle, the intersection of religion as a search for meaning with worship as acceptance will strike some as an ideological endorsement of the way things are. That will be a disappointment to readers seeking a critical edge, a gift to those seeking devotional comfort. Steve Schroeder
