A Fantastic Resource for Going Green,
By Stacey Kelman (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Living Green: A Practical Guide to Simple Sustainability (Paperback)
Greg Horn did an excellent job with this book! It's very comprehensive, realistic and empowering. It explains the effects on the environment from the food we eat, the products we use, the energy choices we make and how our homes are built. The best part is his very specific recommendations in each chapter. Some of the life changes are quick and easy and others require longer term planning.
Horn doesn't sugar coat the disturbing facts about our current environmental problems but focuses on the many potential solutions. Some of the content of this book may be a bit shocking to people who haven't read environmental literature lately, but fortunately Horn balances every problem with one or more solutions. After reading the book, I feel informed and empowered that I am making choices that are making a real difference.

The environmental crisis seems overwhelming and you, as one person, may feel like there's so little you can do. But that's not the case, and this book shows you the way. You don't have to completely change your life (although you can pretty much do so, if you choose, with the information in Living Green) to make a difference. From recycling just that little bit more, to reducing your water and power consumption in simple, painless ways, the book is filled with tips that prove you CAN make a difference. It's an easy, enlightening read that helps you take a fresh look at items and behaviors in your everyday life that you can make greener.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Living Green: A Practical Guide to Simple Sustainability (Paperback)
I have now purchased 5 copies of this book. Living Green is a very simple book, outlining many concerns of unhealthy living. There is no way I could possible do all of the green suggestions mentioned in this book, but after reading this book, I know I can do my part. I've passed this book on to many people and will continue to do so!
Too many "green" books read like catalogs meant to help you order "green" items. This book does not read like a buyer's guide.

This book was handed out to the crowd at a global warming talk I went to. Although the talk did little to address what we all need to be doing, this book filled the void.
This book is small enough not to deter the less informed or skeptical reader, yet detailed enough to keep the envirowarrior's attention. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone wishing to fine-tune his/her healthy living skills.

Don't waste your money-just go to author's website,
This review is from: Living Green: A Practical Guide to Simple Sustainability (Paperback)
I was fairly disappointed in this book. It over and over again states the need for green living but states little on affordable ways to go green. Most of us interested in reading books on green living GET IT. We don't need to be convinced over and over again. Thats why we bought the book. Anyway-No cleaning solutions etc. The solutions it does offer tend to be a little out of my pocket book (or very overboard for me), ie buying hybrid car, organic bed, ripping out carpet, building a green house. Some of the simple things stated in the book are no brainers-turning of lights when not in room. Instead of buying this book go to the author's website, wellbuilding.com. The basics of the book are there and all the websites author Greg Horn states to go to for more information all throughout the book. I do find the site a help which is why I added a star to make it a three star rating. Don't waste your money on the book and just go to the website. www.wellbuilding.com

Wow! I am blown away by this little green book.,

If you only have time to pick up one book on green living, do yourself a big favor and buy this one. This slim, green laminated "bible" of a book will quickly educate and guide you on positive steps you can make right now to improve your health, your home and the world around you. It's thoroughly researched, well organized and engagingly written for folks like you and me; frankly I couldn't put it down. For once, I don't feel lost in the jungle of environmental choices. Greg Horn's book left me feeling empowered, clear on the changes I wish to make, and well-armed with the resources to do so. Would make a great gift for everyone on your list, too. Highly recommend this one--don't pass it up.

Living Green 06,

I really liked this book. It is a little hard-core, but motivational. The book overviews an entire green/health lifestyle: from diet to household energy. The author follows his own advice in part because he has multiple-chemical-sensitivity. He is also very eco-conscious, but there is definitely a strong health slant (he was the CEO of GNC and is for Garden of Life).
I cannot yet (I make too little money) buy a new car or retrofit my home to be more green, but I like his advice and plan to read it again when I do have money. The diet and personal products sections have good buying guides and I can put these sections into action in my life now. If you are looking for a consumer guide, I recommend you pair this book with "The Virtuous Consumer" by Garrett- a slightly more mainstream book. I also bought and recommend "Clean House, Clean Planet" by Logan.

Excellent book,
This review is from: Living Green: A Practical Guide to Simple Sustainability (Paperback)
Every thing in this book is explained in a concise manner and in terms everyone can understand. He provides a lot of examples and reasons why certain chemicals are bad for the environment and your own health. He also makes a point to illustrate how powerful our individual actions are, even in relation to the rest of the U.S. and even the rest of the world. The recommendations he makes are generally very easy and aren't too expensive to implement.
Overall, this is an excellent book. It's very empowering and I've recommended it to everyone I know. I suggest you do the same!

Greg Horn did a superb job creating a simple, practical book for real people.
This is by far the most practical approach I have come across to living a healthier, sustainable life by making simple changes in our everyday lives. It never gets too technical and is supported with solid suggestions and recommendations along the way. Mr. Horn's personal experiences and real-life, tested solutions are what make this one a gem. It is an easy read that is not only a great started book, but was also a wealth of information for the more seasoned environmentalist. It has been a frequent item in my Amazon cart as a gift for all of the people in my life who I really care about. It's the real deal for real people! |
