Asserting that the majority of us will experience a chronic illness during our lives, this book proposes that we can make the best of a bad situation by learning to self-manage chronic conditions. The authors lead you gently through the stages necessary to develop the skills you will need to manage your illness, to carry out everyday activities and to cope with the emotional challenges of living with a chronic condition. Common symptoms, such as fatigue, stress, shortness of breath, pain, anger, depression and sleeping problems are described, along with ways to manage them, including relaxation, guided imagery and exercise. The information on exercise is especially good, while the chapter on eating well is a disappointment, focusing on weight control almost exclusively and giving little information on nutrition. Chapters describing heart disease, emphysema, diabetes and other chronic illnesses are brief but informative, and list organizations and resources for each. The goal of proper management is not just to avoid pain and reduce inflammation; it is to maintain the maximum possible use of affected joints and the best possible function. This involves maintaining the fullest possible movement of the joint and the greatest strength in muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the joint. The key to this goal is exercise.
