Good devotional Bible, January 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Living Insights Study Bible (Hardcover)
If you're looking for a work full of footnotes with lots of commentary on ancient cultures and details on the ancient texts, this isn't it. What it is is a great devotional Bible, plus very good book introductions and some good articles about Bible characters. Such articles are not academic: they're expository, very obviously the work of a preacher, and I mean that in a good way. Chuck's great at helping us realize that the Bible, which sometimes feels so distant and ancient, is about real people and real situations which can be of help to us in world in which we live. I have one hesitation: there's a short article on the importance of accepting dispensational theology if you're going to understand the Bible. I hate to see that, since, well, mostly since I'm not much of a dispensationalist. I can see people running into that article, realizing they don't concur, and tossing out the rest of the notes. That would be a shame, because there's lots that's good here. We've given away a number of copies of this Bible, and it's the one I use the most often for study, teaching, and occasional preaching. It's nicely printed and easy to read (though the pages are a little thinner & more fragile than I'd prefer). Highly recommended.

A study Bible with the insights to apply personally., February 10, 1999
By A Customer
This study Bible has been invaluable to me. Chuck uses his unique gift to add personal applications to passages, and encourages the reader to experience what God has for him/her through the scriptures.

Great choice for an all purpose bible, March 9, 2005
This review is from: The Living Insights Study Bible (Hardcover)
I won't attempt to critque the main content of this book, which is the NIV text of the Holy Bible. The Greatest Book ever written speaks for itself.
What makes it different are the various study sections written by Charles Swindoll. If you are familiar with his radio show, you know that he brings important, practical, plainly stated messages that are loaded with the good news of God's love. Before each book in this bible, Swindoll gives a couple of pages of history about the book including the writer, the setting and the purpose and themes of the book. I haven't read all of these, but the ones I have read really do give some insight about where the writer was in his life when the book was written.
Several times in each book, Swindoll includes a paragraph about the next few chapters, giving you some things to look for when reading. Most helpful to me were the "Living Insight" boxes sprinkled throughout the entire book where Swindoll relates a verse or two to modern, practical living. These are a breath of fresh air and sometimes can give you hope to make it through the day.
I would recommend this book for any study, or reading purposes you have. If you do not own a bible and would like to purchase one for the first time, I think you will find this enjoyable and helpful. If you want to dig deep into the word of God, this is a great choice. About the only thing it isn't good for is to sit and display on your coffee table, but that is really not it's purpose. Read it, mark in it, don't be afraid to use it and carry it around. If you wear it out, you have made good use of it. I would say "buy this book, and wear it out". I think Mr. Swindoll would agree.
