Laugh Out Loud!,
By
This review is from: Living With Intention: Designing a Wildly Fulfilling & Remarkably Successful Life (Paperback)
I think this is the first time I've read a self-help book that made me laugh out loud--several times. The author has a great way of combining practical, easy-to-follow techniques for improving life with light-hearted humor.
Each chapter focuses on an individual technique for making improvements in all aspects of life. I've put several into practice with incredible results in my life. Reading this book is like having a life coach right there next to you. Don't miss this one!

Living with Intention: a remarkably useful book!,
This review is from: Living With Intention: Designing a Wildly Fulfilling & Remarkably Successful Life (Paperback)
Living with Intention combines witty, interesting writing with useful practices -- practices that work! Each chapter educates readers and combines all insights with a call to action. These practical action steps result in the behavior changes necessary to transforming your life. The book has helped me re-frame my thinking about myself, my job, and my relationships. Even more important, I have taken this new way of thinking and have applied it to my actions. As a result, I feel more equipped to face challenges, accomplish goals, and experience lasting joy. I often find myself passing along the wisdom found in the book to my friends, colleagues, and family members when they come to me with their own challenges.
I have often been skeptical of "self-help" books, but Living with Intention is a practical manual that I couldn't have done without. I highly recommend this book!

This review is from: Living With Intention: Designing a Wildly Fulfilling & Remarkably Successful Life (Paperback)
Dr. Davis's comic talent deserves to be directed towards an all-humor book. Her tales of personal comeuppances are truly funny and touching at the same time. Here's an example: After succumbing to the flu on Valentine's Day (the kind that keeps you hugging the toilet), her one-year-old daughter repeatedly exhorted Dr. Davis to stop drinking the water in the toilet bowl if she wanted to feel better. If you like that one, wait until you get to the softball stories!
Seriously, though, the humor serves to break down the barriers most of us feel between "experts" (especially well-educated ones by Dr. Davis) and normal folks. Her book has a serious purpose which is to direct you to take charge of your life to create a direction and a style that make you feel terrific. Here's a brief overview of her key points: 1. Change your perspective to a more powerful one: See yourself as in charge of what's going to happen to you; be optimistic; and choose meanings for what happens that inspire you to keep going. 2. Pick a direction: Determine your values; picture what you want; develop goals; and find the support you need to succeed. 3. Become efficient in employing your focus and energy. 4. Fill each day with happiness (life is a journey, not a destination): Savor what you love; re-experience things that bring you joy; help others; lose yourself in something joyful; be grateful. 5. Build on what you do best. 6. Develop resiliency in responding to external and unexpected events. Each section is filled with specific descriptions of research that talks about how to do these things, strategies for turning the research into practice, and exercises to help you move your thinking along. A good portion of the book is also devoted to pages where you can write down your thoughts and the results of exercises so that you can keep track of your progress over time. Dr. Davis doesn't limit herself to her own resources: She also cites many other excellent books and free online resources that you can use. I don't know of a better, simpler, and more helpful book for taking charge of your life. Those who find The Success Principles to be too daunting (with all of those short chapters on things to do) will find Living with Intention to be low-key, accessible, and comfortable. Get the ball rolling today by ordering this excellent book. If you need more help, Dr. Davis is also a life coach who can work with you directly. That sounds like fun! Just don't ask for help with softball.
