5.0 out of 5 stars Unceasing prayer a Guide
`Lord Jesus Christ have mercy upon me a sinner' is a very old prayer. It has been used in both the east and the west as a way to practice unceasing prayer. Zaleski helps up to approach this in a realistic and hopeful way. There is not the expectation that tomorrow you will be able to pray continuously without fail, but this book will help us to grow in the desire to pray...

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, complete introductions
This slim volume is an excellent introduction to the Jesus Prayer for those in the Western Christian tradition. It is practical and down-to-earth, bypassing the Eastern theology and mysticism often embedded in introductions to the prayer.

This book includes a short history of the prayer, instructions for its use including the setting of realistic expectations, guidance...

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction, June 2, 1999

This review is from: Living the Jesus Prayer (Paperback)
Zaleski's book is a perfect introduction to the traditional Jesus Prayer (or prayer of the heart, or prayer of silence). Not only its length, but its writing style is disarming and unintimidating. When read with Way of a Plgrim and Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God, it can be a great introduction to Christian mysticism in general. Recommended further reading:Teresa of Avila,John of the Cross,Scupoli's The Spiritual Combat.

If you have read "The Way of the Pilgrim" and feel attracted to the Jesus Prayer, you may safely rely on this little book to get you started and keep you going.

I like to memorize worthwhile and beautiful passages in books as an aid to internalization, to become what I read, and the highest praise I can give to this book is that the whole thing is worth learning by heart. Fitting...for the "Prayer of the Heart."

Why only three stars? This is a solid, useful book written in straightfoward language but it contains nothing to set it apart from similar books.

This review is from: Living the Jesus Prayer (Paperback)
This booklet contains a series of two dozen short meditations revolving around the Jesus Prayer, its origins, and its spiritual benefits. Given that these two dozen meditations cover barely over five dozen pages, do not expect a greeat deal of detail to these meditations. That is not to say that it is a bad book. It is a good book. Just don't expect to be something that it isn't. The best use of this book would be to read a chapter as a short meditation before practicing the prayer.
