4.0 out of 5 stars Living Lies, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Living Lies (Kindle Edition)
Dean Lawson was back to clear his name. He was never tried or convicted for the disappearance of Michelle Carling twelve years before, but everyone in his hometown was sure he was responsible for it. When Michelle's body was discovered, he knew the time was right to set the record straight. He just hoped that everyone would be prepared for the backlash. What Dean wasn't prepared for was his reaction to Michelle's little sister at the memorial service. Haley was always a cute kid, but she had grown up to be beautiful.

Haley Carling was carrying a burden too large for one person to carry alone, but unfortunately she had no one to lean on or to really help her. Her sister Paige had escaped and moved to the city. Her brother Garret had his own family to worry about, and wasn't there to help her. She had been running the family business while caring for her alcoholic mother after her father died. When she realized that Dean was back, she was conflicted between the rumors surrounding his involvement with Michelle, and her lingering schoolgirl feelings for him.

When Dean presented his evidence to Haley, they decided to team up to find the truth. No one approved of their association, but they decided the grief was worth it to find a killer. As they spent more time together, they couldn't resist the pull between them, and gave in to the combustible passion between them. When Haley became the killer's obsession, it was a race against time to expose the truth before she became the next casualty.

I expected this to be just a good suspenseful read, but it turned out to be much more, and the appearance of Michelle's ghost added another unexpected element. Haley lived such a depressing existence letting a sense of responsibility to her family and the family business suck the life out of her. Her whole family disintegrated when Michelle disappeared. Her father never giving up hope on his daughters return, literally gave up on everything else, and her mother crawled into the bottle without ever emerging. Dean was branded a murderer without any proof, and was understandably set on proving his innocence. Well written with multi-layered characters. This emotional story is one you will not want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful suspense, September 11, 2010
This review is from: Living Lies (Paperback)
First, I want to say I love romantic suspense, and this debut novel by Dawn Brown sucked me right in and kept me on the edge of my seat until the finish. You have Dean Lawson, the town's misunderstood boy whom everyone believes was responsible for Michelle Carling's disappearance twelve years ago. Now that her body has been found, he's back to clear his name. What he's not prepared for is meeting Michelle's little sister, Haley, at the memorial service or the sudden attraction between them.

Haley Carling's family fell apart when Michelle disappeared, so when her body is discovered, Haley decides to investigate and find some closure. Teaming up with Dean, her high school crush, meets with disapproval but these two are determined to find answers that nothing else matters. And the more time they spend in each other's company the closer more they're drawn to each other. In fact, discovering unparalleled passion and falling in love wasn't part of their plan. But when Haley became the killer's obsession, they must find out the truth before Haley becomes the killer's next victim.

Living Lies is an exciting and well-developed story that pulled me in and kept me reading. Ms. Brown has created a fascinating story with intriguing characters. You root for Dean and Haley all the way until the surprising conclusion. I look forward to seeing more from this author..

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Suspense Read, September 3, 2010
This review is from: Living Lies (Kindle Edition)
Another fabulous, fresh story from a great up and coming romance author. Finely crafted with characters you can care about, Living Lies is a fantastic read that left me satisfied with the story. I'm so happy there are authors out there writing stuff that isn't about shape shifters, vampires and werewolves for people like me who like to read real stories in real situations. Dawn's fresh voice does justice to the romance genre.
