Trilok Gurtu and fellow percussionist Nana Vasconcelos are consummate magicians who produce an astonishingly sophisticated variety of rhythms from "primitive" instruments.
Both are capable of leading other musicians in a merry dance, and together the effect is dazzling. This is a complex and exciting recording which I never tire of, evoking rites, dances, incantations and other magical events.
Shanthi Rao on veena and European masters Jan Garbarek (in tense, excited mood) and Daniel Goyone (playfully evoking a termite-eaten piano in the jungle) fill out the melodic dimension. Nicolas Fiszman on bass is brilliant.
A thrilling album -- check out tracks 3, 4 and 7 for a quick sampling of the delights in store.
Highly recommended.

That's a really good review the other reviewer wrote . I gave him a yes vote . As i sit and listen , yet again , to my cassette tape recording of the same disc , i gotta ask , are we listening to the same recording ? I like Trilok Gurtu . Sometimes more than others . I liked his short stint with OREGON (particularly their 45th PARALLEL recording) . Additionally , i really enjoy Mr. Gurtu's work with John Maclaughlin and Kai Eckhardt on their two collaborations . This is not the first or only recording of Mr. Gurtu's i've owned . Furthermore , i'm aware that Allmusic gives this recording almost the full measure of 5 stars . Basically 5 stars . Do i need hemp to appreciate what's going on here more ? I really do like the (acoustic) piano playing of Mr. Goyone and the funky , chunky fat electric bass of mr. Fiszman . Sometimes , i do feel some of these songs are knotty simply for the sake of being knotty . Sometimes , i wonder why Jan Garbarek sounds as if he is endeavouring to "charm" the percussion on his two guest efforts . Sometimes , the electronic drum kit and keyboards are just tedious . This recording is most certainly not as strictly acoustic as you may think or wish . It's different . That's good . It's very different . B.Y.O.W though .
