About the Author

Anne-Michelle Marsden began her journey into the contemporary Mayan culture as an accidental tourist in the Toledo District. An avid eco-traveler, she was unaware of how her destiny would be determined by an unplanned stop in Toledo during a hiking/camping adventure in the spring of 1999. During her stay she learned of the Maya's desire to educate others about their traditional culture, as well as preserve the wisdom of village elders, at a period in time when the paving of a road to the district was soon to change the Maya's life paradigm.

Marsden returned to the United States, began researching what little is widely published about the contemporary Maya, sought a substantial personal loan, requested a sabbatical from Rutgers University, and headed back to the Toledo District to design and direct what was to become the Mayan Elder Cultural Project. This project culminated in the development of The Living Maya documentary.

Along the way, she met professional photographer Eric Leupold, who became her partner in the documentary's development. Two years later, this partnership resulted in the creation of MayaViewkeeper, and the donation of the documentary to The Maya Leaders of Southern Belize and the Belize Ministry of Education and Sports. The documentary is now used throughout Belize in high schools and the University of Belize.

Marsden's professional background includes 16 years of service as a Rutgers University faculty member stationed off-campus, and charged with developing community based educational initiatives. She has implemented numerous community action grants and published national award winning curricula on personal development and interpersonal communication. She is the past president of an American Society on Aging (ASA) affiliate - Society on Aging of New Jersey - and currently serves on an ASA editorial board. Throughout her career she has presented at numerous national and international conferences and has worked with HelpAge International in both Belize and St. Vincent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Virtual Experience of the Mayan Culture!, August 24, 2001
By
Marie Marsden, Associate Professor (Rappahannock Community College, Warsw, Va. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Living Maya : The Mopan and Q'eqchi' of the Toledo District, Belize - Central America (PC - CD-ROM) (CD-ROM)
The videos and sounds accompanying the text allows the viewer to experience the Myan environment and culture in a virtual sense. I felt as if I had been transported in spirit to the culture of the Mopan and Q'eqchi Maya of the Toledo District of Belize. The superb photography in each section, the Elder stories, the selection of the topics, such as their arts and crafts, agriculture, traditions, stories, folktales and much more describing the daily life of the Maya today, as well as their history, provides a wonderful, entertaining and important journey backward and forward in time simultaneously. The users guide with its basic and advanced questions is a great educational tool and fun to use. It is like being introduced to a piece of history and a group of people who are living that history in the 21st century. What an unusual experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey. It is one I will take over and over again!
