Generic Advice, over-used formula driven Book,
By
This review is from: Living in the Moment: A Prescription for the Soul (Hardcover)
I'll be honest right off: I did not finish this book. The author starts out with a dialog against all that is wrong with our current culture, "The Boomer Dilemma". 76 pages, almost a third of the book. I think there are some valid points made about the state of our culture; but the title implied I was getting more than that. Once the author actually gets to providing advice, it looks a lot like every other self help book I've read. A rehash, a combination of beginner meditation, psychology, Buddhism, some 12 step advice thrown in. I also felt the author used conflicting advice: Transformation takes place from within, yet the author uses forces on the outside to determine happiness. I'm not really sure this fits with the title of the book; I think Mr Null is leveraging an over-used phrase from our current culture. I would NOT recommend this book. If 'being present' and 'living in the moment' is what you after, check out introductions to Buddhism. You will get more out of one of those books.

Living in the Moment by Gary Null,
This review is from: Living in the Moment: A Prescription for the Soul (Hardcover)
This book is phenomenal! I wish everyone would read it. Gary Null acknowledges that it is hard work to do what he suggests, but it is SO worth it. This world is pretty wonderful, but if we all at least considered the possibilities in the book, we would all totally rock.

As a psychologist and author this book is excellent at cutting through all the psychobabble, and garbage of self help books. Null, is honest and shows integrity through out the book. I have never read a book where I agree with everything written, and actually no one should. We are all different , and all need a little different slice of guidance. This is NOT a plastic, superficial self-help book. It is a road map for the soul and one always has the choice to accept it or disregard it.
As one who has experienced, first hand life trauma and has been in the psychology profession for over twenty five years, I highly advise this book. Thank you Gary Null, I agree with your philosphy and have been implementing some of your ideas for years. Dan Williams, author of Above His Shoulders. |
