How can someone who has a chronic disease like multiple sclerosis also be healthy? The answer is by choosing behaviors that promote health -- the optimal level of function and well-being within any limitations imposed by an impairment. As multiple sclerosis fluctuates or progresses, the overall physical and emotional capacity can be nurtured, and improvement achieved within realistic goals. This broad and positive approach to health is also conceptualized as "wellness, " with emphasis on those areas within our control, those opportunities to make thoughtful and informed choices to enhance our function, attitudes, and general sense of well-being. This approach not only has implications for the present, but also can impact long-term health. In order to choose wisely, it is necessary to be informed of the ramifications of various behaviors and activities. This book addresses the overall area of choices for wellness and related issues...

"Topics addressed in this edition include areas of interest to caregivers, family members, friends and professionals alike. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in how to effectively live with multiple sclerosis...appendixes are comprehensive making this book an excellent resource to the professional as well as the individual with multiple sclerosis." -- Connie Easterling, The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers "This brief and highly readable book covers such topics as pathology, diagnosis, course, treatment and symptom management. The answers are clear and nontechnical. Additional features include sections on financial and emotional well-being as well as alternative therapies. This is a very nice book for patients with MS. It is designed for newly diagnosed patients who have many questions about their disease. Interested readers will find many of their questions answered here." -- Doody Publishing, Inc. "This book can be recommended to all those interested in MS: be they people with the disease, their relatives or friends. The wellness approach is an attitude that does not focus so much on what is lacking - deficits - but rather on what is possible, which truly marks a paradigm shift in neurology that is so important." --The International MS Journal "How can someone who has a chronic disease like multiple sclerosis also be healthy? 3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, November 29, 2000
By A Customer
I was disappointed in the content of this book. Most of the information that was addressed can be easily obtained from other sources, i.e. NMSS. There were statements contradictory to many other sources on diet, nutrition, and vitamin supplements. I think this book would only be useful for the newly diagnosed and I would advise researching other sources before accepting all the statements in this book.
