I just received my signed copy of Jonathan’s new cd in the mail and so I will attempt to write the first Amazon review reacting to each track on first listening:
African Breeze – Sparkling instrumental to kick off the album. What you first notice is the energy and the drive without the groove being too heavy – reminds me of something from the ‘70’s like “Livin’ Inside Your Love” by George Benson.
Next up is the title track Living My Dream – Jonathan is determined to let the positivity flow. Some great scat singing on this one as well as strong background vocals.
Be Still – Another instrumental with an obvious spiritual reference this time. These are tunes that show the best of Jonathan’s guitar artistry where the instrument is allowed to breathe and his jazzy chops begin to shine through. This is a great relaxing tune that spins into a wonderful freeform jam featuring the late great George Duke on piano.
Let There Be Light – Three out of four instrumentals so far – harking back to the “Jonathan“ album from 2005. This is once again a tune that moves, grooves, and sparkles.
Heart and Soul – Strong and heartfelt song that might do well as a radio single. The style kind of hearkens back to Jonathan’s 80’s output, but I really enjoy the ‘realness’ of the instrumentation.
Song for You – Quirky synth intro leads into a quirky song with a Caribbean rhythm. Not a Butler original but a fun song nonetheless. Midway through the album this feels good. So far each track has had its own style and space. This is a well paced project.
Catembe – Jonathan switches to electric for a more bluesy feeling instrumental. Some tasty licks show up that are more B.B. King than Benson. I like this change of pace!

Jonathan Butler’s stateside recording debut was back in 1986 when he released the eclectic album Introducing Jonathan Butler. Including elements of his native Africa, Smooth Jazz, R&B crooning and heartfelt gospel inspiring material, Butler immediately provided his listening audience with a unique hybrid musical style. Closing in on 30 years of impressive and at times downright inspiring albums, Living My Dream draws in all of these genres into one cohesive recording, resulting in his most extraordinary soundtrack testimony since 2005’s Jonathan.

Living My Dream awakens you immediately with the absolutely stunning optimistic sway of “African Breeze”. It has all the trademarks of a classic Butler composition that includes a toe tapping rhythm section further enhanced by Jonathan’s flawless optimistic guitar player along with a lively horn section. The instrumental is a beauty and while she is the crown jewel of Living My Dream there are several precious instrumental gems to be found. In fact of the eleven tracks over 50% of the material carries the guitar voice of Butler. Prance forward and find the tearful more meditative “Be Still” that not only plays tribute to the recent passed George Duke but also features the late Mr. Duke. Mellow mid-tempo results can be found on the remaining balance of the instrumental tracks with the album concluding with the more gospel tinged song “A Prayer”, with Butler’s wordless but uplifting vocals bringing both the song and the album to a conclusion.

In between the six instrumentals, the album is peppered with five vocal tracks of varying quality.

Wow! Sneaky good music. This "feels" like old George Benson with the mix of old jazz guitar and smooth vocals. The instrumentals are vintage Butler and the vocals are supreme.

This is another wonderful album by Mr. Butler. JB's talent never seizes to amaze me. If you do not have this recording, please purchase this and add to your Jonathan Butler CD collection like I have. My recommendation would be to buy the CD simply because Mr. Butler always has lovely things to say on his liner notes to those who have contributed to this album.

Will please anyone who knows JB tunes from his early days [even way back to 1990], I think this is probably as good as his early stuff and is growing on me as I've played the CD more than 3-4 times recently. A great mix of vocals and catchy smooth jazz grooves.

I'll start this review by unabashedly saying that I am immensely prejudiced in Jonathan's favor, because he has been a friend for many years. He is one of the most terrific human beings and a dedicated, masterful musician! You can hear his heart in his songs and his native South Africa influencing his songwriting. The same joy and spirit he puts into his performances can be heard in his recordings. He is having fun at what he does best, sharing his soul and talent with his audience. Keep living the dream, Jonathan, so we can all be part of it too!
