Book Description

May 9, 1996
The latest techniques in pain management, including a Chronic Pain Anonymous Program

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book grew out of Dr. Reilly's experience as founder and director of the Westcenter Institute at Tucson General Hospital, a drug and alcohol treatment center where some 10 percent of the patients were People With Chronic Pain (PWCP). The book is divided into two parts: Part 1 reviews the mechanisms and types of pain, how and why people become chronic pain addicts, and treatment modalities. Exercise, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, relaxation, and group and family therapy are shown to help chronic pain sufferers recover from dependence on drugs, especially when combined with the Twelve-Step Chronic Pain Anonymous program detailed in Part 2. Dr. Reilly believes that this program can provide the care and support millions of pain sufferers need. The absence of a list of resources and references supporting this hypothesis is a serious omission. Richard Sternbach's Mastering Pain: A Twelve-Step Program for Coping with Chronic Pain (Putnam, 1987) advocates much the same approach, and Rene Cailliet's books (e.g., Head & Face Pain Syndromes , Davis, 1993) provide more practical coping advice.
