Fabulous & touching!,

This review is from: Living With Pride: Ruth Ellis @ 100 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The life of Ruth Ellis, a 100-year-old African-American lesbian, is beautifully portrayed in this film. It's wonderful & touching--a great perspective on both black & queer history. This bridges both generational & racial gaps. And the woman herself is awesome, funny & quick-witted. You won't regret seeing it!!

Wonderfully Inspiring Movie,

I would thoroughly recommend this video. Ruth was an amazing woman for so many reasons. Not the least of which is her inspiring courage in living her life as an "out" lesbian for over a century. Not to mention the other aspects of her life as an entreprenuer, homeowner and spiritual person. I aspire to be like her and hopefully, live my life with as much pride and dignity as Ruth. The movie is well done and a joy to watch. The best scenes are those with Ruth herself, as she describes her life past and present with humor, candor and wit. We love you Ruth!!

A great portrait of a great lady,

This video is a graceful and loving portrait of a woman who has created history just by being herself. Living with Pride captures the sheer beauty of Ruth Ellis' life and should be required viewing in any class on not just GLBT history but post-Civil War African American history as well. She is a true inspiration not just to black gays and lesbians but to all who want to know the "secret" of living a long, dignified, truth-filled and healthy life. Ruth is now 101 years old....Wow!

This 100 year old woman, who lived through times in history some of us have a hard time reading about, is just an absolute gift. Providing a meeting place for gays & lesbians to meet without fear of retribution, opening & operating a business at a time when it was rare for women to be business owners...her life has been an inspirational force. I sincerely hope Ms. Ruth has many, many more years of wearing out the young ones on the dance floor and just continuing to be herself.

Magical Years!,

~_~Ruth Ellis revists her 100 magical years. I call them magical because it is such a miracle that a lesbian -- and a colored lesbian at that -- was able to survive all that Ellis survived. Her wisdom makes me want to be a better human being. Really makes you concentrate on the good things in life. What a happy woman! She is just happy... even when she is crying, she is happy. The filmaker works wonders. Her charm at capturing Ellis' timeless wisdom is not only gracious but seems to be effortless. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her work. You can't go wrong with this documentary. It is exactly everything a documentary SHOULD be. I'm more than sure that it will inspire everyone, somehow..... someway. Get yourself some inspiration, why don't you!

This is an amazing story of Ruth Ellis, the oldest living black lesbian at the time of her death. "Discovered" late in life, Ruth had lead a largely segregated life until she met a white lesbian in the form of a self-defense instructor. The women she would meet through this fateful connection fell in love with her, just as you will, and the result is this documentary about her life. I have seen this film several times and each time learn something new from it. If you are interested in learning about those who have laid the foundation for where we are at today, this is a wonderful investment in our history.
