London in the 1950s. A mysterious house, home to a family that has seen better days, will not yield its secrets. And a love affair turns to tragedy... Graham Greene, one of the foremost writers of our time, based the play on his own passionate but doomed affairs, and his conflicted view of Catholicism. The program includes an interview with the leading Greene biographer, Dr. Norman Sherry.

A L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring: W. Morgan Sheppard, Julian Sands, Kirsten Potter, Samantha Robson, Jane Carr and Judy Geeson.

About the Author

Graham Greene (1904-1991) was a prolific English novelist, playwright, short story writer and critic whose works explore the doubtfulness of modern man and ambivalent moral or political issues in a contemporary setting. Greene combined serious literary acclaim with wide popularity. Although Greene objected strongly to being described as a mere "Catholic novelist", his religion informs most of his novels, and many of his best works (e.g. Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter and The Power and the Glory) are explicitly Roman Catholic in content and preoccupations. His later works show a greater interest in international politics, e.g. The Quiet American. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good material, uneven acting, July 3, 2011

I owe many of the wonderful plays produced by LA Theater Works, but this is far below the average and will likely be re-sold soon.

On the one hand, I found this very grim play very good and interesting, with much compelling dialogue on love, life, death and religion.

On the other hand, Julian Sands is just terrible as the main male character. He maintains the same artificial, monotone, depressed tone of voice throughout the whole play, and he shows no hint of spontaneity. I found his performance theatrical in the worst of its meanings. Everyone else is really good, but every time Sands was in a scene I would cringe and hope for him to leave soon. The following is a bit of an unfair comment, perhaps, but I also thought that Jane Carr, while playing her part really well, has a voice that just did not fit. Her strangely funny voice is perfect in comedies, but her role here is way too dramatic for that.

Anyway, I would not recommend this play much. Too bad because without Sands' mediocre performance it could have been really excellent.
