Exclusive Sting "25 Years" interview

Biography

Composer, singer, actor, activist - Sting has won universal acclaim in all these roles, but he defies easy labeling. He's best described as an adventurer, a risk-taker. As he himself said, "I love to put myself in new situations. I'm not afraid to be a beginner." Husband and father of
six, masterful guitarist and bassist, and also a devoted Yoga practitioner, he's made a career, in fact, of new… Read more in Amazon's Sting Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Another feather in Sting's cap., February 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Living Sea: Soundtrack From The IMAX Film (Audio CD)
I now feel somewhat deprived at not having seen this IMAX movie as of yet as if the soundtrack is anything to go by, it must be fantastic. I bought this CD purely because of Sting's name on the label and was pleasantly suprised to notice that the music herein differs from anything I have heard from any of his studio albums. Many of the songs seem to be in a similar vein to "St. Agnes and the burning train" from the Soul Cages and it is good to see the original album version included along with Fragile. The entire album is full of relaxing ocean music with a twist of some of Sting's earlier work interspersed for good measure. As others have stated, some existing songs such as "Why Should I Cry For You" have been taken and given acoustic interludes which helps them flow seemlessly with the rest of the album. The whole CD can be played from start to finish easily and it is almost therapeutic in nature.

From what I know, Sting did in fact write all the modified songs on this CD with the exception of the last two and that can only be a good thing. I can't really add much to what has already been said in terms of the quality and nature of of the songs included on this CD except that it really is a must buy. I would heartily endorse it to anyone interested in this style of music, and certainly to any Sting fan.

My only gripe? Hard to spoil this flowing praise but what the hell is that live version of "One World is Enough / Love is the Seventh Wave" from Bring on the Night doing here!? It seems so absolutely of context....

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget Calgon... this will really take you away!, January 6, 2001
This review is from: The Living Sea: Soundtrack From The IMAX Film (Audio CD)
Not that you necessarily want to hear about my life, but I first began to regard Sting as a serious songwriter when a former love of mine sent me the song, "Mad About You." I was so swept away by the passion in the words. I didn't even know the music yet, but the words were so powerful that I had to hear the music. It seemed every time I went to find it at the music store, the album it was on was out of stock. Then someone sent me a piece of it from the soundtrack of "The Living Sea" and I thought it was so beautiful. As a guitar player, I loved the acoustic guitar woven into the beginning of the piece and knew you could only get it on this soundtrack. I was lucky enough to find the CD when out visiting a friend in Georgia. I knew what a treat I was in for where "Mad About You" was concerned, but when I heard the rest of the soundtrack, I just melted.

From the moment the opening strains of "Fragile" are heard, you are brought into a decadent and sensual world of sound. I don't know that words can actually express just how picturesque this music truly is. All I can say is, buy it! Buy it! BUY IT! Then go home, light some candles, close your eyes and let yourself drift away on a web of gorgeous melody.

Someone in an earlier review mentioned that "One World/Love is the Seventh Wave" seems a bit out of place among the other titles, but I think perhaps another way of looking at it is that it provides a little change of pace. But soon you are plunged right back into the lush, sensual mood of the other pieces.

Sting's music here is beautiful and infectious. At times melancholy, at times lively, at times thought provoking... this album will really take your mind and soul on a spiritual journey. If you are a fan of Sting, you will love the special interludes. They do not draw away from the power of the original versions but rather, they infuse them with even more beauty if that is possible. If you are not a fan of Sting, I can almost promise you will become one after this album becomes a staple in your CD collection.

This is not an album for everyone, but if you love music that takes you away, helps you relax, puts you more in tune with your spirit and the beauty of the world around you, I could not recommend a CD more highly.

Two side notes, someone stole my computer and unfortunately, this CD was still in it so I am purchasing it again. Yes, it is that good! And, Amazon also carries the DVD and VHS of the IMAX film "The Living Sea." It is a wonderful film. While no doubt, it would have been even more phenomenal on an IMAX screen, it is worth your while to pick up the home version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure paradise!, September 18, 2000

This review is from: The Living Sea: Soundtrack From The IMAX Film (Audio CD)
I knew even while watching this IMAX film that I had to have the soundtrack. I went straight to the gift shop to buy it, and haven't stopped listening to it for 3 years! Sting's music will soothe you and transport you to somewhere wonderful. Even if you haven't seen the film, the music speaks volumes. This CD makes me nostalgic for my time spent in the islands, and I know it will do the same for you. All of the tracks evoke feelings of the sea and of beautiful, tropical places. As opposed to other reviewers, I didn't mind the live track, as it has a tropical feel to it and tells us that we need to respect and preserve the beauty of the sea. The CD just flows with incredible power. It's one of Sting's best works, and easily one of my all time favorites. Buy this CD!! I know that you'll enjoy it!
