I am a mother of an Army Paratrooper. My paratrooper has served two tours over seas and it was hard. The hardest part was that no one in my family could relate, at all. The consensus is that he's the one serving, not you. I get that from him too - but RaeLynn is able to point out that although the person that takes the oath lives with it, so does the family, particularly the parents, spouses and children.
Some of the chapters were hard to read, because I know the people involved personally, but the stories needed to be told. The country needs to know what our families go through; unfortunately the majority of the population will not read this book. It goes back to the fact that less than ½ a percent of the population volunteers for the military, and so the rest of the country - I'd say 95% - don't relate to the military in any way, shape, or form. Because of that ½ of a percent the rest of the country doesn't need to worry about it - they can just take their rights for granted, without the responsibilities that are tied to those rights.
My advice to anyone that is thinking of entering the military, or marrying into it, or is actually living it right now, is to read this book. Read and understand that you can get through it, but support networks are lifesavers - Facebook is great for that, other military family members, etc. But this book is a great start to understanding some of it.

This book should be read by EVERY American so they'll know more about the sacrifices made by our military members and their families and hopefully, grow to appreciate the less than 1% of our population that serves our country in this way. It helps explain why so many are suffering from PTSD, because we aren't raised to take another's life. That creates inner conflicts.

This book tells it like it is. A great variety of stories of our men and women who have given their all to serve their country. I must say that I shed many tears but I know so much more than I did before reading the book about our military. I think every American who has not served in the military should read this book. I never, never knew or understood like I do now. My thoughts and prayers are with our military men and women...

An accurate reporting of all aspects of the ongoing fight for freedom and survival. From recruiting to training, deployment to combat and the return, no holds barred. But most important is the account of those left behind and the post deployment aftermath.

I would call this a "Must Read" for anyone considering getting married to an Active Duty military member. It is important to go into this life with as much information as one can get. It isn't an easy life but it can be very rewarding. No matter the seperation of distance or years, these people will still remain family. I lived this life and loved it,but RaeLynn got the warriors to express things they may not have expressed even to their spouses and these things are important to know.
