5.0 out of 5 stars This was a life altering book for me
I starting reading this book thinking I was not in denial, but I wanted to see what it had to say. I did the exercises even if I didn't see the point. Well I found out although I had not cleared out any memories, I had repainted some seemingly small details that made a huge difference when I saw them for what they are. This book has helped me to start working on things...

1.0 out of 5 stars Do You Really Need This?
My husband and I are in our fifties, and both of us have had serious trauma (war, loss of children, near-fatal illness, etc.) in our lives. We've been safe in our relationship with each other for thirty years. But after reading and using this book, we both became anxious, began fighting, and I went into a depression deep enough to require hospitalization...

I starting reading this book thinking I was not in denial, but I wanted to see what it had to say. I did the exercises even if I didn't see the point. Well I found out although I had not cleared out any memories, I had repainted some seemingly small details that made a huge difference when I saw them for what they are. This book has helped me to start working on things that I really didn't know were a problem, and it has brought significant change into my life.

For the first time I can remember in my 38 years, I have a sense of peace and I am starting to feel comfortable in my own skin, which is something I didn't think was possible. I still have a long way to go on the road I am on, but before this book I didn't even know the road was there.

This book takes you through the steps to dig into what things have caused you pain and see them for what they are. Then it gives you the steps to overcome the limits you placed on yourself due to what you have uncovered. This is not a feel good cover up, this is the real thing that will help deep within yourself. It isn't always easy, but it is absolutely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From pain to power, May 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Living the Truth: Transform Your Life Through the Power of Insight and Honesty (Hardcover)
Dr. Keith Ablow's tome, "Living the Truth," isn't just another self-help book. It breaks new ground, offers new assumptions, and for many of those who will read it and listen to its voice, there is hope for a better future. The truth can often be a terrible weapon of aggression. Ablow's book, with the center of his thinking bound to the idea that no one has a perfect life, that you must face your conflicts head on, that everyone living on this earth is experiencing one form of pain or another, is a guide to gaining insight in the understanding that gaining insight puts us on the road to where we want to be. Everything about Ablow's own experience as a vulnerable human being has contributed to his belief about life. He isn't the psychiatrist as God or Nitzche. He lives the truth as he has come to know it, as he believes others might benefit from it. He shows you the way. Ablow's premises are free of politics and cheap philosophy. He goes to the center, to the pain we feel, to the regrets that hound us, to the inadequacies we try to hide. Ablow is the ultimate psychiatrist. He is the ultimate humanist. Living the Truth can be a road map to a life without pain. It won't be a road map to a perfect life because there is no such thing as a perfect life.Ablow helps us to come as close as we can to mastering our psychic existence in this vexing thing we call our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Bob, July 14, 2007
I found the book very helpful in getting to source of unresolved unconscious conflicts of the past. In uncovering what he calls our life story clues... Dr. Ablow is able to (with the help of the work book) take the reader to the past and then begin to understand the mystery of why we behave the way we do now. It help me to stop running and look directly at the Truth the life story clues unmasked and then discover the personal freedom that take place. It's what we truly desire. "Living the Truth: Transform Your Life Through the Power of Insight and Honesty" is an inexpensive way to get started down the road to the past. This book can improve the quality of anybody's life (no mater what you uncover) as it did mine... No Doubt.

This review is from: Living the Truth: Transform Your Life Through the Power of Insight and Honesty (Hardcover)
Dr Keith is a well-known TV personality so when I happened to watch him promoting his book on a morning talk show I was tempted to turn the channel. But he was plain spoken and passionate about the topic of dealing with the reality of one's life and facing one's demons. I bought the book and must say although it is a difficult journey to face one's fears inadequecy's and failures--he gently guides you through the process without allowing for self deprecation but building strenght in oneself based on a foundation of truth. Highly recommend.

This review is from: Living the Truth: Transform Your Life Through the Power of Insight and Honesty (Hardcover)
The book is extremely well written and easy to follow. It gently lays out a path in which each person walks to examine their past. This examination allows one to view past events and how they intrude on current day behaviors. Following this method my life has already improved and the self awareness has opened a window into my own truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychotherapy in a Book--Absolutely Amazing!, October 25, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I would never have read (or even known about) this book had I not been completely enthralled by Keith Ablow's novels! I'm not much into self-help books, despite many, many psychological problems, and well over 10 years of therapy. Shut up! OK, yes, I pretty much belong in a Woody Allen movie...

But, I couldn't be more grateful that I decided to buy "Living the Truth"! Dr. Keith has done the impossible with this brilliant, compassionate, and very honest work: provided the real experience of psychotherapy to people who may be reluctant to "go there". He takes the reader on a journey of personal discovery and genuine healing. This is not an easy journey for many, myself included, but the empathy of the Good Doctor shines through on every page, making it feel safe to explore those areas of our lives we may prefer to avoid examining.

I wouldn't be surprised if many therapists out there are a little bit PO'd about this book, because it might mean a reduction in business for them. Then again, if the past traumas of the readers are big enough, it might mean an increase of business! Dr. Ablow suggests seeking professional help if reading the book and doing the exercises cause unwieldy feelings to overtake the reader, and gives excellent advice about seeking a therapist who will work best with the individual. That's pretty darn classy, if you ask me. I believe many writers of self-help books only wish to promote themselves. Dr. Keith Ablow is the real deal.

I wish everybody would read this book, because it could make the world a much better place! Well done, Dr. Ablow!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Helped Me, May 27, 2008
By
I disagree with the person who said this was just like every other self-help book he/she had ever read. It was different for me. It really helped me. I discovered the root of my weight problem and I remembered some things in my childhood that shaped my current behavior. I've also been able to remember many details of my childhood that were blocked before. I recommend this book very highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, May 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
He encourages us to examine the incidents that have been so painful in our lives so that we can fully comprehend their impact and work them out with the same compassion we would show someone we love. I feel he has empathy and a true desire to help people understand themselves and others they have to live with.

I liked the book very much.
