5.0 out of 5 stars Mindfulness at its best, August 22, 2010
This review is from: Living Well with Pain and Illness (Paperback)
This is really a great book!

I don't have pain or illness but I do know stress very well and this book has helped me to be able to work again. I used to be able to keep up work for periods of about 3 years and then I inevitably crashed, lying in bed, energy gone, just empty really. One day I realized it was stress that was doing it, just putting a lot of pressure on myself and exhausting myself.
This book and the Breathworks approach has helped me really do something about it as well (it's not enough just knowing it, you really need tools to do something about it and the Breathworks approach has really given me this). I can work now and keep on working, I'm aware of stress building up and I know what to do to prevent it from really getting out of hand. I'm enjoying work and life!

I've started applying the breathworks principles with people in pain/illness/stress myself now (I'm a teacher, teaching these principles and practices now) and I see them benefiting from it, really experiencing choice in how to deal with life and all its challenges (and pleasures).

A really good book, written by someone who knows what it is to live with pain/illness/stress and who has a firm basis in mindfulness practice as a practicing Buddhist and meditation teacher.

Reading Ms. Burch's book has been a wonderful experience. She is so thoughtful and clear in her writing. It is obvious that she has learned a great deal over the years from finding ways to live well with her own pain, and in her book she is generous in sharing her wisdom. Reading and sitting with her observations and thoughts was helpful to me in my own life, especially in learning to be ok with limits, whatever they might be. I am a therapist, and have been adapting her methods in my work with chronic pain suffers, which has been very helpful to my clients and myself.
