5.0 out of 5 stars A man after my own heart...:)
"Living Well" is probably the most sane nutritional/lifestyle book for people with MS (and people without MS) that I've read in my nearly 30 years doing the MS dance. It's a 21-day primer, and I'm taking it one day at a time, working through the 21 days of information, incorporating each day's information as I get to it. (As of this writing, I'm up to Day 7.)...

I have MS, so I bought this book to see what diet and supplements he takes. Unfortunately, his food plan follows the standard food pyramid, which encourages lots of grains and carbs. For some of us, like me with food allergies and sensitivities, wheat and gluten products increase our symptoms. I was also disappointed that he didn't detail all those supplements he took on...

(As of this writing, I'm up to Day 7.)

The book gives sound information and advice, with no crazy supplements, concoctions, etc. One of the things that struck me (which I've been telling people forever) is how he recommends the "custom" water idea. Montel, I've been buying a single, new, unusually-shaped bottled water every few weeks and refilling it with filtered tap water for the past several years. Did you snag that idea from me?...:)

I like that Montel keeps it simple, and also that he seems to have the same type of MS symptoms I deal with, so I can easily relate to him. The resources for his information are excellent, and with all the above in mind, I recommend this book without hesitation.

Keep on keepin' on, Montel... and everyone else out there dealing with MS or any other chronic illness. Where there's life, there's hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking the walk and talking the talk, January 4, 2008
I was just on Montel's show yesterday and I know that Living Well can transform who you are today. Trying a wholistic, natural alternative, or approach may make all the difference in your efforts.
If you've been feeling poorly for a while, yoyo dieting, dealing with aches, pains and chronic ailments, going green may be just what you need for the results you want.
I know juicing green and eating more veggies and fruits has helped me through my cancer treatment enormously and clearly Montel with his MS symptoms.
Montel shares how he Lives Well and made it easy for you to do the same!
Do yourself and your loved ones a favor, try his receipes and make a shift in your lifestyle for good.
Bye bye feeling bad, HELLO happiness!
To Health,
Emme

Author & Book Views On A Healthy Life!

Book Review: Living Well: 21 Days to Transform Your Life, Supercharge Your Health, and Feel Spectacular by Montel Williams

You may recognize Montel Williams as a talk show host, philanthropist, and author, but did you know that he's also a decorated former naval intelligence officer? An advocate for teen empowerment, veterans' causes, anti-drug initiatives, and MS (multiple sclerosis) research funding--he founded The Montel Williams MS Foundation after a personal diagnosis of the disease in 1998. You'll recognize his series of books about healthy living, including--Living Well: 21 Days to Transform Your Life, Supercharge Your Health and Feel Spectacular.

Living Well incorporates experts and their current research, practical guides and advice, recipe examples, a walking program, and exercise demonstration photos with explanations. The purpose of the book is not just to help readers lose weight, but rather live life more healthily. This includes weight loss, exercise, and understanding what to eat.

For this Montel follows The Living Well Code:

1. Base your diet on a foundation of a rich variety of many different vegetables and fruits, especially in their fresh, natural, and whole states.

2. Include healthy carbohydrates from whole grains and healthy fats and proteins from foods like fish, beans, and nuts.

3. Minimize saturated and trans fats, sodium, processed foods, added sugars, and cholesterol in your diet.

4. Be mindful of your calories in and calories out, to work toward a healthy body weight.

5. Don't skip meals, deprive yourself, or go on fad diets.

6. Get regular physical activity, at least 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week.

7. Combine these steps and you can reduce your risk of many major diseases, such as: cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, obesity, several forms of cancer, and other diseases including Alzheimer's, osteoarthritis, and macular degeneration.

Montel has completed quite a bit of research for Living Well. One project though he says should be required reading for everyone: The Effects of Exercise and Diet on Chronic Disease by Christian K. Roberts, Ph.D. and R. James Barnard, Ph.D. Western society is plagued with killer diseases, such as those listed by Montel, and they are rapidly increasing in developing countries. The project looks at several prominent long term studies, and draws the data together. The point is this--with lifestyle modication through exercise and healthy eating--most people can begin to turn their lives around and possibly prevent further bodily destruction to themselves.

As someone who really wishes to live a full life, despite a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 1998, Montel Williams relishes powerhouse foods that will significantly improve his health. With a desire to help others, he's researched and compiled a listing of foods that he refers to as "The Power of Adding In."

Montel Williams Top 10 Living Well Powerhouse Foods

1. Rainbow Foods--all vegetables and fruits: eat these for their phytonutrients

2. Antioxidant Superstars--vitamins, beneficial plant chemicals, minerals (best sources are directly from food)

3. Superpower Greens--disease fighting leafy and cruciferous vegetables

4. Whole Grains--fiber, nutrients, complex carbs (examples are oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa)

5. Superfish--omega-3 fats (sardines, canned Atlantic salmon, Alaskan cod, Atlantic herring, Atlantic mackerel, farmed oysters)

6. Extra Virgin Olive Oil--monounsaturated fat, good for the heart, but is 120 calories per Tablespoon

7. Canola Oil--low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat, use it for cooking

8. Nuts--unsalted they are a good source of unsaturated fat, choose a moderate portion, high in calories

9. Sweet Potatoes--vitamins A and C, fiber, potassium, beta-carotene

10. Custom Bottled Personal Ice Water--bottle and ice your own tap water to go

Calling soda and sports drinks a waste of money, and advising readers to skip them, Montel himself drinks smoothies and freshly juiced vegetables and fruits when he rises, in the late morning, and at mid afternoon.

His Sweet'n Easy Green Smoothie is simple enough for anyone to prepare.

Making 2-4 servings, peel two bananas and two oranges (quarter). Add the bananas to a Vita-Mix blender, then the orange segments. Next add 1 head of washed romaine lettuce. Add water to the "Max Fill" line on the blender. Blend together on medium, then on the high speed until smooth. Serve chilled.

Whether you're a celebrity or not, you can improve your diet and look as good as one by eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fish. It's the Power of Adding In!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on nutrition ever., January 21, 2008
I'm not a diet person, but this book is about changing the way we eat and look at the foods we eat. Love it, feeling better and losing weight already after just 10 days. Much more energy and feel great. Montel knows what he's talking about.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have MS, so I bought this book to see what diet and supplements he takes. Unfortunately, his food plan follows the standard food pyramid, which encourages lots of grains and carbs. For some of us, like me with food allergies and sensitivities, wheat and gluten products increase our symptoms. I was also disappointed that he didn't detail all those supplements he took on Oprah. However, I got a lot of hope from his positive attitude and I enjoyed reading his story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living Well. Wonderful Book, February 7, 2008
I first watch 'Living Well' debut on the Montel Williams show. At first I wanted to cry because he showed personal trainers and things I can not afford as I am a 24/7 caregiver to a 90 year old mother.

But I watched the show anyway and realized there was so much I could do! I bought veggies and fruits and juiced them. Within two days I no longer liked coffee. I have so much energy, more alert, clearer mind and more active.

I live in a community of older people and I have started giving some of them these health drinks and they all became instantly addicted to them. This is that 'HIGH' that you are told you would get in those 'Power Drinks' but this one really does give you wings.

It is well worth the money to even try his recipe. You will be surprised how your body will recognize 'Real' food instantly and crave more.

This book should be a text book in all levels of school to teach the importance of real nutrition. Anyone can do this, it is not expensive at all and it tastes so good. You have nothing to lose except maybe some extra weight or some ill health. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living Well with Montel is wonderful, April 7, 2008
Montel is such a caring person....his book is so good and has such wonderful information on so many things that we should be doing and eating to make our bodies healthy. I am trying to do it his way so that I will stay healthy a lot longer and not gain weight back. I want to be here to see great-grandchildren. Can't wait to see the results in a few months. I have a wedding to go to in Nov. and want to look great as well as feel great. That is my short term goal. Long term goal is to stay that way. :)

Montel is very passionate about sharing what he is doing to keep himself healthy. I wanted to go out and get a green smoothie after reading his section on how he was introduced to green smoothies. He said it "blew his mind"!

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VALUABLE LIFE-CHANGING INFORMATION, March 8, 2008

In the usual Montel style, this straight forward book gives you the tools you need to truly revamp your life. It includes great nutritious recipes, sensible exercise advice, and a miriad of ways to "improve you" by treating your body and mind the way you should. It's honestly life-changing, even if you do only a few of the recommended alterations to your usual routine. Once again, Montel proves that he cares. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
