"Living with Reality" has helped me to understand this connection and to harness it in very dramatic ways.

For the way I process things, I like to have a fact pattern to go back to, a method to help me recognize what I'm doing so I can shift out of the behavior.

When I was in AA and immersed in the Program, I read the literature over and over for spiritual guidance and for practical applications of spiritual tools in everyday life. When I picked this book up, I realized on a deep soul level that I was ready to move beyond just looking at my alcohol addiction, and start to look at how I am addicted on many levels. I switched to this book and it is now my handbook for living. I continuously draw upon the material and expect to for the rest of my life. I'm very happy with the progress I've been able to make using it.

The pages on addiction (in Part 1) have always stood out to me as profound amd applicable to everyone. They have helped me to understand how addictions originate and how everyone suffers from addictions as coping mechanisms for our pain, fear and anxiety. I came out of a model of support which focused on substance addiction--like food or alcohol--but what has helped me recently is to identify when I'm addicted to fantasy, how I try to escape into in a fantasy world and how that hurts my ability to be in reality.

For the way I process things, I like to have a fact pattern to go back to, a method to help me recognize what I'm doing so I can shift out of the behavior. I like the aspect of the book that is linear nature as it helps me see where and why I'm being triggered and to do something about it.

I have been a psychotherapist since 1985, and i have read and studied many approaches to understanding and changing human behavior, but I've never found anything as comprehensive and powerful as this book. I had the good fortune to have the developing manuscript for years as it was evolving and have been using it to support my own and my clients' transformations. Its encyclopedic and compassionate understanding of human pain and patterns helps us to begin the process of change by having compassion for ourselves and the human condition. Then we move on to understanding the much-maligned ego and a step-by-step guide to rebuilding the way we think, feel and act in everyday life, facing reality with relaxation and an open heart, instead of being dominated by unconscious motivations/beliefs/patterns/emotions.

Living with Reality is the most powerful tool I can offer my clients, because as the author, Beth Maynard Green, says, "consciousness is the answer to every problem," and that is exactly what we achieve more and more of by studying and practicing the principles, tools and exercises found in this book. I have been using it for ten years and every time I read it I learn more. It's a feast of support that is never exhausted.

Thank you, Beth, for all the effort it took to write this amazing book.

If you really want to change for the better, this book describes from the core how to do so. Unlike other books, this one lays it all out, step by step, how to truly change starting with the understanding of how we developed patterns, behaviors, or habits, as well as understand how we are the way we are. This book provides so much useful information. If everyone practiced what is in this book, our world would be a wonderful place to for all to live in.

I honestly can't say I was looking for a book like this and I still avoid it sometimes when I know it will help me. That's usually when I don't want to be grounded and confronted on some of the fantasies I have become accustomed to. However, I was introduced to this book during a workshop and have discovered that, over time, it has been incredibly helpful to me, especially in helping the way I interact with others.

What I read in Living with Reality last night that really struck me is that the only thing we really have in this world is our self-respect, and if we don't have that, nothing can compensate.

When I was younger, I was searching for self-respect but didn't know exactly what I was looking for or how to get it. One of the issues I would face is my inability to talk about problems or matters of relationship with others without fearing that I'd lose the relationship or be hurt. If there was something going on between me and another person, I would usually withdraw or cut off the relationship altogether. That wouldn't really help but just leave me feeling uncomfortable and anxious and more insecure about the friends that I had. There are a lot of good parts of this book, but a couple that are really good are the chapters on Becoming Oneness and Becoming Differentiated. They teach how to stay connected with people without losing ourselves. It's not about setting boundaries, but a way that I hadn't experienced before. I have become a lot more honest in my relationships and also better able to recognize relationships or aspects of relationships that are unhealthy for me. By speaking up more and being willing to risk the pain of losing a friend, I have had more respect for myself.
