5.0 out of 5 stars Diagnosed with d/md? Read this book.
I was diagnosed with depression in 1994. All the help that I found was for short-term crisis management of my illness. I struggled for years with long-term management. At last I found this book to help me with long-term management of my illness. It is a wonderful book bursting with helpful information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the other workbook
It is a good one, but I really am disappointed that it is not as good as her workbook that is titled Living With Depression and Manic Depression. I found that it was harder for me to relate to this workbook compared to her other workbook. I would recommend the other one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for manic-depression ever, May 22, 1999

This review is from: Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Workbook for Maintaining Mood Stability (New Harbinger Workbooks) (Paperback)
This is the most important book on depression/bipolar disease the patient and/or family could own. I've read many, and none offer as much understanding, as well as help and guidance, as this one. It is helping me to stay well, live productively, and take much burden off of my family members. I believe it could save my life. Thank you to Mary Ellen Copeland for sharing her life experiences, precious time, and devotion, with those of us who need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource With Qualifications, October 19, 2000

This review is from: Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Workbook for Maintaining Mood Stability (New Harbinger Workbooks) (Paperback)
This book helped me immensely as I was coping with major depression. I couldn't stop crying, feeling sorry for myself and being completely terrified of the total loss of control in my life. The book examines many aspects of wellbeing, and is BEST in providing practical suggestions and solutions while being sensitive to a very diverse audience (uraban/rural/old/young..). however...the book does have a tendency of making you feel too sorry for yourself. I am an adventurous, intelligent, sensitive person, and depression crippled my feelings. The book seems to suggest that "stability" is better than extreme emotions or living with too much adventure. I believe you can radically transform your life - you just need enough motivation to overcome repeated setbacks. Use this book in conjunction with some motivational reading that charges you up. Also, the book spends a lot of time on medication. I decided NOT to use any medication, and managed to restore my serotonin levels by daily exercise and proper nutrition. The book does stress the importance of natural remedies to depression, but seems to suggest medication is an unavoidable necessity. This isn't the case. Read "Prozac Backlash" or "Beyond Prozac" (forget the authors), which discredit this culture of chemical dependency to get better. You CAN get well. Stay focussed, and use the book's suggestions to eliminate triggers. Happy recovery!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile resource, December 27, 2008

This review is from: Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Workbook for Maintaining Mood Stability (New Harbinger Workbooks) (Paperback)
This book makes for a worthwhile resource for the clinician who works with those individuals who suffer from Depression and Manic Depression. I gave a tele-conference this month entitled "Dealing with my Loved Ones Depression" and the assignments were fitting to the topic. They are also useful in the ongoing counseling relationship.
As I spoke about during the tele-conference as many people are celebrating and looking forward to the holiday there are many more who are struggling with depression, experiencing suicidal thoughts, feeling hopeless and helpless, as well as there will be an increase in psychiatric admissions.Depression is more than something to "get over." It needs the understanding of the family members and the assistance of trained professionals. In my private practice of Personal Life Coaching I work with the family members who live and love someone with depression. They need to know there is help and support for them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Living Without Depression and Maniac Depression: A workbook for maintaining Mood Stability, July 27, 2006
This review is from: Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Workbook for Maintaining Mood Stability (New Harbinger Workbooks) (Paperback)
This book was not as helpful as I had hoped. It does contain legal information that was helpful, and legal papers to fill out in case of emergency. The rest of the worksheets were pretty basic and I dont think if I had the change to buy it again, that I would.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information for living without depression or manic depression, May 18, 2007
This review is from: Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Workbook for Maintaining Mood Stability (New Harbinger Workbooks) (Paperback)
I am another person who finds proper diet and exercise and other positive activities help those diagnosed with these illness, often overdiagnosed. I was told by uncaring people I would need medication all my life and encouraged by people who really listened to me rather than think I "had no insight into my condition" and helped me see myself as the normal person I am and do positive things without depending on medication to live a good ordinary life. This has good suggestions for that. I only don't agree that once diagnosed depressed or manic depressed or bipolar or any other mental illness that you need medication for the rest of your life as so many are told nowadays.
