This review is from: Living & Working in Ireland: A Survival Handbook (Survival Handbooks) (Paperback)
I bought this book and another book by the same author, How to Buy a House in Ireland, at the same time. I would advise others not to do the same, as much of the information is duplicative and the most important stuff (basics on arrival, residency, work, house buying, insurance, etc.) is covered in both. Because both books were so similar, the following comments apply to both.

I found the range of the subject matter covered to be very helpful, as Mr. Laredo does cover most of what a new arrival would need to know (or provides contacts for more info.) The appendices were particularly helpful and contained lots of good suggestions for additional reading material (both practical and fun).

Style is a bit dry though, and could use additional editing. I found myself, on more than one occasion, reading and re-reading a sentence to see if it made sense and deciding it didn't because a word/sentence fragment had been omitted.

I would recommend buying Steenie Harvey's Adapter Kit to Ireland in conjunction with this book. The Adapter Kit is easier/more enjoyable to read (Ms. Harvey writes very well, has an obvious love of rural Ireland, and as a British ex-pat, reminds you of the things that made you want to move to Ireland in the first place) but lacks some of the detail of Living and Working in Ireland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Resourceful, November 18, 2011
This book pretty much covers everything. I do not regret purchasing it. I am Irish and hoping to move to Ireland in the near future. The book covers everything of how to gain citizenship, careers, where to live, cultural background, medical care, renting or purchasing a home. etc. One important thing that gave me a great deal of information was taking my pet with me. Being former military there are strict regulations on taking your pet to the UK/Ireland.I will go into a more indepth review of this book for you all at a later time. Just not feeling well right now with upcoming renal surgery. But if you are considering purchasing this book than please do. I have had the book for about 3 years now and still learning from it. It feels like a big encyclopedia of Ireland for a person wishing to move there.
