Product Description

Living World Cuttlebones are an excellent calcium source for birds. The rough edible surface helps to trim the beaks of birds as well as provide something for your bird to chew on. The cuttlebone is equipped with a holder, allowing you to place it throughout your bird's cage. The Living World Cuttlebones can also be cut into smaller pieces or ground into a powder and used as a nutritional supplement for all types of birds.

I don't think that this is safe to give to my birds.

There is another cuttlebone product like this made by the same exact company (Hagen) called "Living World Cuttlebone, Large, Twin Pack" and this is one of the customer's review:

"I've had birds for almost 25 years and given them a lot of cuttlebones. This is the first package I've ever opened where the cuttlebones both had a putrid fishy odor. One had discolorations on it as well. I'm not going to use it as there is clearly something remaining besides the mineral. I'm not blaming the seller, but it's the last time I buy them online. These were from Thailand."

Now he's lucky his smelled like fish. One of mine arrived discolored as well and smelled like dog poop. I'm not kidding. DOG POOP. I opened up half of the package, took in a deep whiff (expecting a pleasant smell), and BAM! There it was. I've bought cuttlebones before and so I know what they're supposed to smell and look like. Birds will peck their way through one leaving some remains at the bottom of the cage unless you have a certain holder for it. There's no way I am going to let my birds have this. Their face, feathers, and the cage would smell like dog crap. It'd be hell to try and scrub them (the birds) and the cage down (that would cost even more money for the proper bird friendly cleaning supplies that are strong enough to eliminate such a smell and a cage to put them in while cleaning).

This item is sitting in a bag in my kitchen right now (I can't help but stare at the thing sometimes and wonder WHY it smells like dog poop...). I'm uncertain if I should send it back or just accept that I just lost about 3 dollars. Like the man before, I am not blaming the seller (the transaction, independent seller and Amazon were great), just the product. Overall it looks good in the photo but really, buyer beware.

After buying these for a bargain price, I didn't expect much especially since lots of little pieces of cuttle had flaked off during transit. Based on another review I dreaded the grand opening and held my nose. Eureka. No offensive smell whatsoever.

As I type this review, Spud the parakeet is enjoying this new cuttle bone and chewing with avian rapture. He gravitated to the new object in his cage immediately and really seems to be enjoying it. Nothing fancy about this product, but I'd purchase again.

The bones each come with one of those flexible metal holders that I immediately removed. Our birds have a plastic holder with built in perch which adds to their enjoyment.

A not so common use for this product is in aquariums. I have several Betta tanks with Apple Snails in the tanks. This cuttlebone is perfect to add calcium to the water to promote healthy shells for my snails. The small bit of salt in this product also assists in preventing fungal growth on the fish.

This cuttlebone dissolves quickly and should only be used when housing fish that tolerate a neutral ph or in tanks that only house snails.

Since this product has no additives it turned out perfect for this usage.

My birds just love it and can not get enough of it. I tried to give them fruits an all, but they prefer the cuttlebones over that.

A parakeet needs a cuttlebone for the calcium in it. He uses it up and then I replace it with another one. They last a long time.

My birds don't seem to like it. It was easy to put on but my birds have not tried it.

Works well. They come with a narrow metal, ribbon-like strip, to attach them to the cage, but I found that a plastic cuttlebone holder holds them more securely since the birds really bite hard on them. I think there should be instructions for newbies for this product, to make sure the correct side is facing the inside of the cage. This may not be obvious to new users.
