Insightful & In-depth,
By Lynne (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Living a Life of True Worship (40-Minute Bible Studies) (Paperback)
This is the 1st Precept study that I have ever done, which I did on my own while on vacation. I chose the book simply because it was on sale at my local Goodwill. However, it has been a great investment. The name of the book can sound intimidating and obscure with the term "worship," but it is effective at bringing it into life application.
This book merges Old and New Testament in describing how we are to come to God in reverence for his holiness. First, it starts out by describing in detail all the things found in the temple -- complete with pictures. It explains the symbolism of how those objects were used in the very elaborate and precise ceremonies in the Old Testament that the Jews were required to perform in order to come to God. Then it ties in New Testament verses on how those symbolic temple objects can be applied in our lives. It was very insightful, and even though I have been a Christian for 20 years, I really had never had the opportunity to study anything like this in the depth that this study covers. The only advice for doing this study is to have colored pencils or pens, and enough quiet time to think about what you are reading. Precept does a great job of asking some questions that make you think and apply it to your life. All the Bible verses that are covered are written in the book, so while it's nice to have a Bible next to you, it's not critical. (I liked that because it's often hard to be reading 5 different passages and try to keep all the bookmarks in place in your Bible.)

This review is from: Living a Life of True Worship (40-Minute Bible Studies) (Paperback)
"Living a Life of True Worship" is a no homework, 6-week-long Bible study. It's designed for small groups to do together once a week in a 40 minute period. The Bible study pretty much let Scripture speak for itself and explored what the whole Bible taught on the subject. The lessons were about what worship actually is, the tabernacle/Old Testament worship and how Jesus fulfilled that in the New Testament, and then how to apply what we've learned so that--as followers of Jesus--we can worship God "in spirit and in truth."
The study had people read several verses (which were included in the book along with information about the context of the verses), mark/highlight certain words, then answer several questions about what was just read. Insight boxes were included with historical information that helped make a verse or point more understandable. This study also included line drawings of the layout of the tabernacle and its furniture (altars, lamp stand, etc.). The questions were helpful in focusing attention on all the points that needed to be looked at. In case you missed a point, the "wrap up" section at the end of each week's lesson summarized what was learned that week. I really enjoyed this study and learned some new things. Overall, I'd highly recommend this Bible study to all Christian believers as it really puts things into perspective.
