5.0 out of 5 stars gentle yoga for beginners
I love this video. I'm recovering from an illness and my strength and flexibility have been limited. Other yoga videos have been too demanding. The pace of the video does seem upbeat at first, but I've found that it is easy to get into the flow, and becomes quite invigorating, once you've become accustomed to it. It's the perfect way to get the day going. I have seen...

2.0 out of 5 stars Yoga at light speed
I'm surprised at the other reviews of this tape. I've been doing Yoga for several years, in a classroom setting and daily at home. This tape rushes you through poses at a furious pace. I'm surprised at the other reviews of this tape. I've been doing Yoga for several years, in a classroom setting and daily at home. This tape rushes you through poses at a furious pace. Suzanne gives you about 1 second to "inhale and exhale" and then she's in another pose. I think she mentions the name of poses she is doing only a few times -- which, for beginners, isn't the best way to become familiar with Yoga. I didn't find the pace relaxing at all, the movements from pose to pose seemed awkward and rushed!

I would recommend the AM/PM yoga tapes instead. They are slower paced, descriptive, and I think are likly to be a better introduction to new Yoga students.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-So Video, September 13, 2000

"hmarsson" (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Living Yoga's Gentle Yoga for Beginners [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this video because I wanted to actually get to a point where I could at least touch my toes again. I made the mistake of trying to do the poses the first time I watched it. The pace seems way too fast for someone's first introduction to yoga. I think it would have been easier if there had been a little notice on it saying to watch it through one or a few times before joining in and letting you know that you'll need supplies to do all the poses. Although all the poses are supposed to be modified, I couldn't do some of them at all. Just to let you know, I'm 21 years old and an office worker so I'm really concerned about other people's ability to do this video when I had trouble. After doing the exercises about 8 times since I bought Gentle Yoga for Beginners, I can say that it's a video that will stay in my collection, but I will definitely be on the look out for something better suited to a beginner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yogaerobics, April 12, 2000

I am new to yoga so I tried this beginner tape - the pace is so fast that I felt like I was doing an aerobics tape. Suzanne Deason has a wonderfully soothing voice and the music is serene but she barely gives you enough time to figure out how to do one pose before she has you zipping along to the next one.She also mentions the names of several poses but does not explain them - a bit of prior knowledge of yoga is apparently assumed. I am still looking for a good beginner's tape.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too fast, June 16, 2000
By A Customer

I find the pace much too fast to be either beneficial or relaxing. I do, however, like Suzanne Deason as an instructor, and, I highly recommend her "Yoga For Weight Conditioning" video for beginners.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone!, February 20, 2000
Frankly, the description that this video is gentle enough for everyone is quite misleading. I bought this for a relative who has knee problems and I myself am pregnant and neither one of us could complete most of the moves. I am already in good shape and have done other yoga tapes with no problems. Also, the instructor's voice was going every moment of this video which did not make for a very relaxing yoga session. I would highly recommend trying the Living Arts PM Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden which goes slower, is more relaxing and is less of a strain for those who desire a real gentle yoga practice.

The pace of the video does seem upbeat at first, but I've found that it is easy to get into the flow, and becomes quite invigorating, once you've become accustomed to it. It's the perfect way to get the day going. I have seen remarkable results in just a couple of weeks. My flexibility is improving, I'm feeling stronger and I'm able to carry the benefits of the session with me into the rest of my day through a better sense of physical alignment and balance and emotional calmness and awarenss. I highly recommend this tape for those who want to get started with yoga. Just the right blend of challenge and relaxation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners!, December 2, 1999
This was my first attempt EVER at Yoga. I enjoyed the clarity of Suzanne's voice and the breathing instructions during each of the poses. In 2 weeks I am now limber, stronger, relaxed and my posture has improved tremendously. I recommend this tape as the foundation for all the others in the Beginners Series. I look forward to more of the Living Yoga Series. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Precise, energizing, relaxing and thorough, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
Suzanne's soothing voice and her unique ability to describe each posture in detail makes this a great video for anyone who wants a soothing, simple and easy yoga workout. Suzanne is obviously a seasoned teacher who brings years of wisdom about the body and the soul. Her clarity, calmness and the pace of this video makes it easy to relax and be guided. Sometimes exercise is a chore but with this video the time zipped right by and I felt revived, energized and peaceful by the end. Thank you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Way too Fast For Beginners . . ., September 4, 2001

I thought this would be an ideal beginner's tape, but it is way too fast for me. Suzanne Deason rushes from one pose to the next with almost no instruction on proper alignment. It is as though she took a 1-hour session and tried to squeeze it into a half hour. (I noticed that reviewers of her "Yoga for Stress Reduction" had a similar critisism.) I found myself getting frustrated and angry - exactly the opposite of how I'm suppose to feel after a yoga session. I prefer Kathy Smith's New Yoga Basics - the pace is slower, and the instruction more thorough.

1.0 out of 5 stars The pace was too fast, January 24, 2000
By A Customer
I was very excited about incorporating yoga into my exercise routine...too bad that excitement was dashed at first viewing! There was just no way I could follow this routine, the pace was very fast.I don't think this is a good tape for people like myself who have no experience with yoga. It is collecting dust on my shelf.
