4.0 out of 5 stars Living with Your Selves
This book is an easy and practical read for those living with a diagnosis of DID and their loved ones. It does a good job of postulating a basic understanding of the diagnosis, the experience of DID, and in explaining some basic steps to take to foster internal awareness of the parts and to develop co-consciousness within the system.

This review is from: Living With Your Selves: A Survival Manual for People With Multiple Personalities (Paperback)
Hocking admits within a few pages that this guide is based on her experience only. And she's right. Most DID/MPD people and their families will sorely miss some of the staples concerning treatment (for example, Hocking has never been hospitalized and thus does not cover it in the book). Plus, the book does not provide any warning as to some of the highly triggering material in a few of the chapters- a must for being accessible to DID/MPD'rs. The book needs more pages to give more details about medications, other treatment possibilities, hospitalizations, and it needs "trigger alerts". There is also very little tangible day to day living assistance (how to entertain littles, how to prevent lost articles, relaxation techniques etc), something that the title "Survival Guide" leads the reader to believe it would have but doesn't. A bit of help is found in the therapist locator section, which goes over some questions to consider when finding a therapist, but like the rest of the book, there isn't enough depth. The book is okay as a quick-read memoir before bed, but for families and patients who want to confront this disorder well-armed, 80 odd pages is not enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good but basic book, July 6, 1998

This review is from: Living With Your Selves: A Survival Manual for People With Multiple Personalities (Paperback)
Well-written and non-critical, this book approaches living with DID from the point of view of someone who has it. I found it very useful for some basic ideas...it would be a good book for someone just diagnosed.

3.0 out of 5 stars its ok as a starter book, November 6, 2009
This review is from: Living With Your Selves: A Survival Manual for People With Multiple Personalities (Paperback)
this book is ok as a starter book for DID. she offers information in a simplistic way which is good for beginning DID'ers. However, systems do all have communication, not every multiple has an internal safe place that looks like a palace or a garden. there are things missing from this book...ways to cope, things to be watchful for, how to maanger your relationship with your therapist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living With Your Selves - Survival Manual for People With Multiple Personalities, January 6, 2009

This review is from: Living With Your Selves: A Survival Manual for People With Multiple Personalities (Paperback)
A MUST for people with Multiple Personalities - I have found this book extremelly helpful in understanding my condition to it's fullest.
It has been very helpful in giving me answers to "why" I react the way I do in certain situations & "why" I am the way I am.
I would definetely recommend this book to anyone who has Multiply Personalities - whether they have just found out they have it - or even if they have known they have had it for a long time.
It has really helped me come to terms with my condition & I have even taken the step forward & let other people know about my condition - & they have accepted me for "who" I am - not what I have!
