I got this book right away.
Kristin Zoellner
Because I come from an Ivy League intellectual background I have found that the intellectual approach to Zen worked best for me.
William J. Kelly
This is the most helpful, complete, and well-written book on Zen I have ever read.

This is the most helpful, complete, and well-written book on Zen I have ever read. I first read it a couple of months ago, and I continually return to it to re-read chapters, gaining deeper levels of understanding.

Living Zen lives up to its title- a book 'alive' with 'presence and soul'. I would highly recommend this book to anyone curious to go beyond any particular religion or system. Linssen's ideas are not a nebulous form of zen 'instruction' but rather a concrete expression of the connection between physics, science, psychology, biology. This book is the most 'complete' book I have ever read.

A good description of what Zen is about. He uses analogies with scientific principles of chemistry and physics to help explain the teachings of Zen. I recommend it to the scientifically trained.

Why has this book remained on my shelf since 2007 when I read it once and rated it as very good to excellent? In transferring my books to Kindle, I read it again. Linssen's book is a difficult read, due to the fact that the concepts are difficult to comprehend and easily misinterpreted, and also due to the translation difficulties. This isn't the Zen that most beginners will want to hear about, but I think it is the real Zen. This book is a curious blend of the scholarly and the practical, not really distinguishable by and large Linssen probably would say. If you want the hard facts about Zen, I would recommend this book. But, be prepared to struggle with the style and, good news! the second half is easier to understand.

This is the closest any westerner has ever come to describing the indescribable.
The nature of zen can only be hinted at. But Mr. Linssen provides through his work a variety of perspectives, so rich in their images and metaphors, that he makes a clear and strong suggestion of it through the spaces that his words can only hint at.
It is absolutely absorbing, yet, it must be let down so often, in order to visualize and assemble its parts and what they imply.
This work belongs in any curious, philosopher-mystic's library.
