4.0 out of 5 stars Broad coverage
A handy book, covers a lot of material but not in great depth. Certainly worth buying as an overview for people considering freeing themselves from the grid.

expected more on this book...how to design and operate an off the grid house for homeowners/designers...which the book did not cover. the book is an introduction to the components/sources of power/utilities that supply a dwelling/building.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very general in scope, don't overpay, September 27, 2010
This review is from: Living off the Grid: A Simple Guide to Creating and Maintaining a Self-reliant Supply of Energy, Water, Shelter and More (Paperback)
I wouldn't pay over $5 for this book, its very general and basic coverage is not that helpful. The information is fair and accurate, but not specific. Not a $15 read.

Well written. A good approach to educating those who need the very basic knowledge of the subject. Not writtem using technical terms, but using down-to-earth, everyday language we can all understand. I would highly recommend this book to novice and veteran alike.

This book has basic information on what you can do to live off the grid but not info. on where to find the items needed to do the different projects which disappointed me otherwise it's a starting point.

2.0 out of 5 stars Light on details but mentions many topics, January 2, 2011
This review is from: Living off the Grid: A Simple Guide to Creating and Maintaining a Self-reliant Supply of Energy, Water, Shelter and More (Paperback)
Good introduction but don't expect a lot of detail. Almost every imaginable concept is mentioned, and there are some good ideas mentioned, but there's insufficient detail to act on any of them. There is a section of recommended books, links, etc but it's standalone at the back of the book rather than being referenced within the body of the topic being discussed. Case studies are interesting but not especially detailed. Overall this book is thought-provoking and will serve as a jump-off to more detailed references/resources.

2.0 out of 5 stars only good for beginner, January 16, 2011
This review is from: Living off the Grid: A Simple Guide to Creating and Maintaining a Self-reliant Supply of Energy, Water, Shelter and More (Paperback)
This book has almost no details. Some alright concepts are mentioned but this is not useful for anyone with even general knowledge of the subject. All concepts or topics are quickly defined before moving onto the next subject.

Learn from my mistake and don't spend your money on this book. There are many other books out there that give better information. The author presents many topics without going into any depth.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Basic info, always tried to find a way to get his political view in., August 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Having solar panels since 1976 (heats our water) thought this might give us a boost as to ways we can further our use of natural resoursces, the info is basic and really not very helpful. It's not specific and frankly his political views don't belong in this book. Living "green" so to speak isn't new and has nothing to do with politcal left/right views. Not sure what planet he lives on but I'm pretty sure "the left" is not the only group that likes to save money and use natural resources. Downloaded it for free so don't feel jipped however was really hoping for DYI plans to save $. Won't find it in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars quick easy overview, August 2, 2011
This review is from: Living off the Grid: A Simple Guide to Creating and Maintaining a Self-reliant Supply of Energy, Water, Shelter and More (Paperback)
This is a quick and easy read about unplugging from the power grid. It covers all the basics in a style that is straight forward and accessible. It's unlikely to be the only book you'll want to read if you're going to do-it-yourself and build your own house or energy system, but it will help you move forward so you can get a good solid start.
